Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 05:20 am (UTC)(link)And Holmes doesn't fall in love with her until she's almost past marrigiable age by the more of the age they both exist in, anyway.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 05:54 am (UTC)(link)I can't see it that way, I'm afraid. I know that this is fiction, and there's no reason to believe that this COULDN'T happen in a fictional universe where people's feelings can change once the magic number comes around, but I keep bumping up against the fact that relationships just don't work that way. If someone had significant authority over their spouse when that spouse was younger, I'm going to assume there was some grooming going on in the younger years.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 06:16 am (UTC)(link)And Mary Russell is 22 when she gets married. People are already calling her a old maid at this point, IIRC.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 07:38 am (UTC)(link)Also, you're seriously, seriously exaggerating. Even in Victorian times, a 40 year age gap was considered squicky. Hell, in the actual Holmes stories, a 20 year age gap was considered eyebrow-raising on more than one occasion.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
Just sayin'.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:14 am (UTC)(link)When she wasn't at school, I mean.
no subject
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:51 am (UTC)(link)Look this fantasist obviously digs enormous age gaps and thinks they are romantic for some reason. That's her privilege. The Russell books are still dire.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:46 am (UTC)(link)That aside, very large age gaps (we are not talking 10-15 years here, which was relatively common) were NOT simply accepted and were definitely frowned on in the early 20th century (which is when the Russell books were set) and also in the 19th fyi.
People who think they know Victorian history often don't.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:53 am (UTC)(link)In which book does Sherlock ever slap Mary around?
Woman getting a Uni education were frowned upon, too, but Mary got one anyway.
Why would you automatically think it would be a bad marriage because a woman in her 20s was marrying a man in her 50s, anyway?
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:01 am (UTC)(link)My comment was also remarking wrt to Russell's books that very large age gaps were not as socially acceptable and common around the 1900s as you seem to think, and are using to justify the inclusion of Holmes/Russell. Two separate points.
You can like the King books all you like (and I have no intention of reading them after Beekeeper, that was enough to put me off entirely) and think that Holmes marrying Russell is plausible if you want. The more defensive you get about them, the less likely you are to convince anyone else that they are anything but author-insert wish fulfillment, though.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
I don't agree with that.
Oh, and I actually liked the Fushigi Yugi series too, fyi.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:33 am (UTC)(link)Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 09:46 am (UTC)(link)But then, Holmes got too popular, and all kinds of trouble started.
Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:13 am (UTC)(link)Re: Um, no, I don't think so
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:12 am (UTC)(link)And no, you're mistaken. In the series, it's explicitly stated that out of Holmes' own mouth that he fell for her the very day they met, when he thought she was a teenage boy, because she was wearing men's clothing at the time.
