I don't think that the romance is as important as it's made out to be by the media. People want to promote it as a love triangle, but Katniss, who after all is the narrator, is ambivalent towards both Peeta and Gale, confused about her feelings, and repeatedly states she has no time to think about relationships. Of course, Peeta does come to be very important as he's the only one who understands what she's been through, but I think it's really more a way of explaining Katniss' state of mind. (After all a 'normal' teenage girl would probably feel very differently about it all.)

and she is repeatedly stating this because the author repeatedly makes it come up. The love triangle is so heavily embedded in the plot that I'm really boggled why people think the media's overplayed it--the book never let you forget it!

But it kinda takes three people for a love triangle...? How can it be a love triangle if there's only two people bothering about the romance thing? I don't get your logic.

You don't thin asking people if they're Team Peeta or Team Gale rather than talking about the protagonist is exaggerating it? Katniss obviously has conflicting thoughts about both characters, but it's not a book about romance.

Except where the romance is a huge part of the plot.

If you genuinely think Peeta vs Gale is an accurate reflection of the primary concern of the series then I don't think we can find much common ground in our interpretations.
