Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)There was a book where the characters go to Finland (can't remember the name), and the country described was basically Norway. Finland doesn't have mountains. Also there was something about a place they could only access during low tide. There's ONE place in all of Finland where you can even see tide, and even then it's really small.
I always get a bit annoyed when a Finn is named something like Sven Johansson, or something that sounds Swedish. It's true that Swedish is the second official language here and about 5% of the population is Swedish speaking, but I think it's more that people don't know the Finnish language, which sounds nothing like Swedish. Swedish is part of the North Germanic languages while Finnish is part of Uralic languages, so they don't even have the same root.
A Finn would be more likely called Kimi Räikkönen or Sauli Niinistö than Sven Hjerson (though this one makes sense, since Ariadne Oliver admitted she knows nothing of Finland).
I wouldn't mind so much if I had ever seen any Finnish character who had a Finnish name.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
See also: "Africa." :P
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, that's probably right... There's always a bit of a knee-jerk reaction from Finns because we don't want to be associated with Swedes. Ew. :P
To be completely honest we sometimes lump Sweden, Norway and Denmark together. They are culturally much more closer to each other than to Finland, we have had so much influence from Russia (and again, completely different language).
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
The only Finn I see portrayed regularly is one in a comedy show in Norway and he is mostly just a drunk who says Perkele, and speaks Swedish if I remember correctly... What was his name?
not that is a great portrayal of Finns, just the only one I can remember.I wanted to use this one, but it didn't have his name on it... :
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)Are you supposed to use a middle name for something? I changed my middle name as the name people call me by when I was 7, because I had two classmates I shared first name with.
Drunk who says "perkele" a lot is how Finns are portrayed in Finnish media most of the time too. Although the ones that speak Swedish are portrayed as snobbish, flamboyant and insufferably happy.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
You are supposed to use your middle name yes, most people I know with middle name goes by both their first and middle names...
Saunas and nakedness is also two things you get portrayed doig/as.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)They do...? This is completely new information. What if they have three names? Or is that something that only happens here? Like we have combination names where we add - in between two names to make them into a one name, like there could be a dude called Jari Pekka Markus, who would be called Jari, and then there could be someone named Jari-Pekka Markus, and he would be Jari-Pekka.
Ah yes sauna, and casual nudity - our favorite past time activities. I remember when Spoony (an internet reviewer) came to Finland for a con, the first thing the hosts did was get him to a cottage and into a sauna, so you know, we keep the sauna-loving image up pretty well.
I always asumed the most weird part about that to foreigners is the traditional vihta/vasta, which is a bunch of branches from birch tied together with which we beat each other while in sauna.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
Yes, well if you are called: Mari Anna LastName you would probably go by Mari Anna, same if your name was Mari-Anna, doesn't matter. Having more than two first names is not usual, so I don't know. Either it is First Name Middle Name and Last Name (+ Last Name 2 if you have both your parents last names).
Going by both your first and middle names is a pretty personal tho, some might always other don't or do only by some people, my step mother goes by only her first name by most, but her mother and older family members use both her first and middle names.
I love you Finns! You are so awesome! Even your casual approach to nudity, which in a weird way envy... No fan of Saunas tho, they are too warm. Yeah the stick things are odd, but not the thing us Norwegians think of when we think of you guys...
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 02:11 am (UTC)(link)That's really interesting. I don't know anyone who would go by both of their names, it would be really odd. Although it does make me wonder what's the point of a middle name then. I guess to give more character to people. Oh and it's very common to have ones middle name or third name to be name of a grandparent or something, so I guess it ties into family. For example, my middle name is the name of my great-grandmother.
I'm happy that you like us! I don't know many people who do. People don't really know anything about us.
Ah, casual approach to nudity is the best. I can't fault you for not liking saunas, they're not for everyone. I love them, and would go there everyday if I could.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
Odd, it is about 40/60 in my life with 40 being people who don't. Those are also usually the ones that have a family members name as their middle name, so that might be why you don't use 'em? My and my partner tend to joke about you guys having middle names you never use.
It might have something to do with Kimi, or alternatively one of the Heiikis or Bottas, I might or might not be slightly F1 obsessed, but also you not being Swedish might have something to do with it? Oddly enough I haven't been to Finland after like the age of 7 so I don't remember anything, tho I am thinking of going there in the near future, it isn't that far away!
Casual nudity should be embraced by more folks! I think it is pretty important to look at nude people as something natural not only something sexual. I don't get what's up with you Finns and saunas, except I actually do I love sitting in a bubble bath thingy outside in the winter, especially after having a snow bath! Oh and I do like the Saunas with steam!
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)Do come visit, even if there's not much anything to see. Unless you really like lakes and forests. Well, there's some stuff in Helsinki, but most of it is pretty small.
It is. Like I don't know if people think it awkward that I've seen my da naked? But that's really common here, where whole families go to saunas together.
Idk either. Maybe it's because up until 1940s most of Finnish children were born in saunas (including my grandma, I've actually been to that sauna, was very good), so you know, it feels safe. And warmth is good during the winter.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
I will, and I know, but take away the mountains and you got Norway... So I probably won't go for the nature, even if it is quite beautiful, I would probably go to Helsinki. And I am used to pretty small, basically all the towns I've lived in have been 20.000 people ones and they are average size in Norway so yeah.
I don't think it is awkward, a bit abnormal maybe, but then again my mother comes into the bathroom when I am in the shower and stuff (when she is visiting, she did the same when I was younger too tho) and so on, but in general it isn't normal to see other people naked, heck even our public pools are building more and more shower stalls and single person changing rooms because people wont be naked around other people of the same gender...
Oh I did not know that! That is pretty cool, but wouldn't giving birth in a sauna become too hot? Or maybe it is relaxing? Warmth is awesome during the winter! Not so much during the summer, I don't like it when it gets too warm in the Summer and spend most of the time in the shades, anything above 25C in the sun is too warm for me.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:28 am (UTC)(link)In official papers and such where full name is expected to be given we have to underline the name we're called, so there's no confusion.
Ah then you'll have trouble with Helsinki. The city center is really small, but there's a lot more stuff surrounding it. I grew up there. Moved to a smaller city in Middle-Finland for university.
Our public pools have like one big shower room, and no private changing rooms, because it's not like there's anything you haven't seen before. And saunas!
I don't think they heated it all the way up. It was the most hygienic room people had in the countryside, so giving birth in the sauna was the most safe for both mom and kid in terms of like infections.
I prefer cold myself. My optimal temperature is like between -5 and -15. I can't stand the summer heat at all.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
Why would I have trouble with Helsinki?
I think I would feel awkward doing that, but I really do envy you guys for it!
Oh that makes sense! I prefer the spring, but winter is no issue I still walk around in a dress and stuff, as long as it isn't more than -25Cish it isn't too cold to do it, even then I might still have a skirt on because I never look at the temperature before going outside, and I never learn.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 11:31 am (UTC)(link)Oopsies, I forgot a no there, pfff. You'd have NO trouble with Helsinki, the place is a piece of cake. :D
Yeah I can see that.
The only thermometer in my apartment is in my roommate's room, and I always leave before he does, so yeah. I might look outside and guess, but most often I just go out and hope I put enough clothes on. Usually I put on a bit too much, because I want to take no risks, walking 2,5 km to school in too few clothes is a pain.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)Well, Pirkka is a Finnish man's name, so closer than most. :D His delivery was way too not-flat though. And no one ever pronounces "perkele" right. :(

I had a Finnish friend who'd probably be uncomfortable with that. She does speak Swedish, but is proud of being, you know, Finnish.
Re: Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media
(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 02:17 am (UTC)(link)I meant no offence.
