Things that annoy you about your country's portrayal in media

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Or things that are downright wrong.

(Americans can talk about their state's portrayal, if there's something annoying there)

Lol, I live in Texas. Don't even get me started. Though, who the fuck keeps voting Rick Perry into office? Maybe our rep is earned.

Can't really think of anything that annoys me. Canada seems to be often portrayed as being filled with super polite people who all speak with Newfie accents (at least in cartoons. Less stereotypical in live action TV, I think).

I guess once or twice I've seen a French Canadian character who talks like he's from France rather than Quebec, but that doesn't really annoy me. It just makes me scratch my head a little.

That it never ever stops raining in Washington, nope, never!

Honestly, it's just overcast a lot of the time. And our winters are rainy because it isn't usually cold enough to snow.

(This currently does not apply. It's been snowing for two days, what the fuuuuuuck!?)

No movie can ever get the accent correct. Which I guess is probably somewhat true for any regional accent, but it's amazing how completely they can butcher it.

Sometimes Oirish accents annoy me in films/TV shows. Other times they're hilarious, though.

Also, Ireland is no longer stuck in the 1950s. Just a note. (Well, you can make a strong argument for the health services, particularly mental health, but culturally we're now primarily stuck in the 1990s, thanks).

In Alabama, when they could pick anyone on the street to poll/interview, the lingering cuts on the news are always rednecks embarrassing themselves. On the one hand, yeah, that's what they said and it's funny--on the other, I don't like the sensation that they're basically being pointed and laughed at on tv. Even if someone is uneducated and speaks with a strong accent they're still people with feelings, and I know a bunch of rednecks who are un-PC but they're also the sweetest most sincere and generous people you'd ever meet.

I'm a native Virginian. It doesn't really annoy me that much, but 'Pocahontas' messed up our geography so, so much. I also get annoyed when we're portrayed as one giant suburb of D.C.

No. Hell to the no. VA is more than Northern VA.

My current home of South Carolina is usually portrayed as a bastion of racist, homophobic, gun-toting, gubment-hating rednecks. First of all, people like that live everywhere. Second, the entire state is not like that. At all.

Okay, so a Finn here, so there's not much to go by. But there's few that rattle me.

There was a book where the characters go to Finland (can't remember the name), and the country described was basically Norway. Finland doesn't have mountains. Also there was something about a place they could only access during low tide. There's ONE place in all of Finland where you can even see tide, and even then it's really small.

I always get a bit annoyed when a Finn is named something like Sven Johansson, or something that sounds Swedish. It's true that Swedish is the second official language here and about 5% of the population is Swedish speaking, but I think it's more that people don't know the Finnish language, which sounds nothing like Swedish. Swedish is part of the North Germanic languages while Finnish is part of Uralic languages, so they don't even have the same root.
A Finn would be more likely called Kimi Räikkönen or Sauli Niinistö than Sven Hjerson (though this one makes sense, since Ariadne Oliver admitted she knows nothing of Finland).
I wouldn't mind so much if I had ever seen any Finnish character who had a Finnish name.

I actually really love America's portrayal in a lot of things, because it's mostly true and I really like overplayed patriotism.

As for Illinois, it ticks me off when all of it's shown to be Chicagoland.

1) CHEESE-EATING SURRENDER MONKEY. I'm so, so tired of these jokes.
2) Other countries might call us 'the country of love' but most of us are not sex-obsessed.
Also anglophones can't get the accent right. You have to exaggerate the rrrrrr sounds.

Hollywood is not a glossy paradise filled with rich people who have lots of plastic surgery and live in mansions. It's a middle-class neighborhood that the rest of Los Angeles tends to look down on as being shady, and is filled with working families, young students, and admittedly some nice stores (in between all the sex-toy shops and mom-and-pop operations).

We have some movie business, but mostly it's just shooting on location and some offices that do post-production work. Just once I'd like to hear, instead of "Well, what do you expect, that's Hollywood for you!", but "Well, what do you expect? That's Burbank/Beverly Hills/Way the Fuck Out In The Desert Past Where Jesus Lost His Sandals* for you!"

*Seriously, had to go to Dreamworks once. Gorgeous campus, way the fuck outside of civilization.

I would be happy if they just hired Norwegians to speak Norwegian, seriously...

Bones is the first that comes to mind, The Norwegian police spoke Swedish.... And did not really have the correct uniforms , but that does not matter much.

Germans are not either Bavarian or Nazis. There are also people in Germany who do not completely suck at English pronounciation.

Not a country, but a city:

It does not rain torrentially in Seattle. It doesn't rain *hard*. It's a constant soft drizzle, not a downpour. People do not wear raincoats/slickers and seldom carry umbrellas.

Also, the grunge era was 20 years ago. There's still plenty of local music, and Seattle is definitely a haven for all sorts of hippies/misfits/artsy types, but it is not 1991 here.

Ha ha HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Are you kidding? Everything, my friend! I'm from Mexico, and seriously, I can count with one hand's fingers the times my country has been represented accurately. The rest of the times, it's painted like a very gross caricature where our problems are emphazised out of proportion, without mentioning or plainly ignoring other facets of the country. Don't even get me started with our culture, language, history, etc.

Believe, I'm more than aware of the many problems we have (I live here, after all), but we are not the hell hole many series and movies make us out to be.

Californian/Angeleno, here. When it comes to the state - we are one of the biggest states in the country and independently outmatch many popular countries (almost twice the size of Britain on our own!), yet somehow all of California is regularly reduced to just Los Angeles, and sometimes San Francisco and very occasionally San Diego.

And even IN Los Angeles...Most people are of the impression that all of Los Angeles is either Beverley Hills or South Central.

Having lived in the latter and living just down the street from the former, I can tell you there is way, WAY more to the city than that, and is ripe for more diverse and interesting media portrayals...but then it wouldn't "be" Los Angeles, now would it?

Then again, I have gone clubbing on Hollywood Boulevard, so maybe there's some truth to the idea that everyone who isn't an inner-city sob story lives the high life. :P

Down South: Ig'nint bigots

Up North: Rob Ford
On the flip-side, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson's response to being shown as the homophobic mayor of Sochi on a US TV "news" segment was pretty funny. And good.
