Re: Moratorium on "pulled" fanfics

Honestly, I'd go ahead and post it. If you can get in touch with the author of the fic to ask her/let her know, I think that would be a nice gesture, but if you can't, go ahead anyway. The fic was out there, after all.

OP here.

One of the things that made my concern come to a boiling point is that in looking back through fandom's past, this author was.. viciously protective of her work at the time. As in, if someone even mentioned their stories were inspired by hers, she would pressure them to delete said fic.

So.. not stepping into that lion's den, even if it has been so many years.

Thank you very much for your insights!

Ouch. Yes, in that case I'd "forget" to mention where you got the inspiration! She wouldn't have a moral leg to stand on if she's pulled the fic to publish for money and you've fanficced it for nothing, but not not tickle sleeping vipers, and all that.

OP again!

This reassures me more than words can say. I know this was the case way back when, but I wasn't sure if this still applied today. Thank you!

Sad part is, when the fic in question was posting, and I fell in love with it, the author seemed like a really nice person. Life pulled me out of fandom soon after it was done posting, and seeing all the insanity that happened afterward (via web archives, old blogs, and journals) kinda makes me glad I missed it!

This person sounds like a hypocritical cow. Being inspired by something isn't a crime, otherwise her own fanfiction is in violation of this imaginary law she thinks other people have broken.

I would suggest, even if it's being on the safe side, not saying who inspired your story. If you want to be even more wary, you could avoid mentioning it was inspired by another fic all together. It's up to you though.
