I'm glad to know it isn't normal... that appointment was only like, three years ago (because of moving to Japan, I haven't been to an American doctor since), so I don't know how that happened. Some weird "gays have diseases" thing? But I can't imagine a nurse would just make up her own questions to ask... if it happens again, I'll definitely say something.

Hmm, I know a while ago they used to deny gay people the ability to donate blood because they "have an increased chance of carrying hiv/aids" but I don't think they still do that.

Maybe your provider was of a similar mindset?

Nurses have been known to go off track... but most likely the leading physician at whatever place you went to was old school and set the standard.

Gays are still prohibited from donating blood here in the US. And with a bunch of conservative pricks at the Red Cross in charge, that's not likely to change anytime soon.

Seriously?

That's dumb as shit. Are they afraid they're gonna get gay cooties from gay blood? HIV and Aids are no longer diseases only in the gay community. It can happen to anyone. Better for them to require a passed test from donators saying they're clean of all diseases. Ugh.

I'm afraid so. The Red Cross voted down an effort to change the rules last year and it likely won't come back up again for at least another decade.

Kind of telling that our attitudes toward gay marriage are progressing faster than some our medical community's attitudes towards our blood supply and AIDS.

Point of information, HIV/AIDS was never only in the gay community.

They test all blood for the spectrum of viruses and deficiencies, anyway, so why they would continue this ridiculous policy is beyond me.

It's also a rule in Cananada.

Certain types of sex are considered high-risk behaviour; various STDs are more easily spread via unprotected anal sex because the likelihood of minute tears is higher than during PIV sex. In Australia the question is "are you a man who has had anal sex with another man/are you a woman who has had anal sex with a man who has anal sex with men", last I knew.
