I felt the same way. The books didn't emphasize romance at all, and in the text it's clear that Katniss' attention to Peeta was initially solely because of its advantageous reflection of her to the audience and later because she did care about him. However I never felt it was overtly romantic in any way, at least not until the series was practically over. Gale was presented as having a crush on Katniss but it was never a love triangle because there was no actual conflict or choice between them on Katniss' part. It was a basic unrequited feeling thing. Of course, I'm sure a lot of that was lost in the translation to movie because you can only portray so much with emotive acting, which is really open to interpretation, and using voice-over to make it clear that Katniss just isn't thinking about love connections would have been totally ridiculous.

But really this is one of the very few YA series I've read where I felt romance was NOT a big part of the story. It just always seemed to be a ruse/tool first and all the genuine feeling was written in a non-romantic way (but it wasn't wholly platonic, either, it just wasn't something that Katniss was concerned about considering the much more pressing issues in her life).

The books didn't emphasize romance at all,

Which is why the president of a freaking country flips out over who Katniss has been kissing.

The romance was not EVERYTHING, but it was trumped up even in the books.

But that's not the romance, that's the public presentation of the romance. Which is huge, freaks Katniss out, and in her head seems to have very little to do with her feelings.

I do read her and Peeta as romantic in a fucked up way as of the cave in the first arena, but she has so many fucking issues that there's just no room for it, and that's okay, considering.
