I hate this trope with a burning passion. Is it so hard to show a cop who's both dedicated to getting the bad guy, but also has morals and ethics? Someone who isn't willing to do "whatever it takes"? I understand gritty determination, but I can't understand why I'm supposed to root for someone who's threatening a mentally ill man with prison.

When I was a kid, my mom had Law and Order on all the time. When SVU premiered, she went to that from the original. I was terrified of the police afterwards. Stabler and Benson always got away with so much shit. Seriously, how many times does Stabler just flat out wail on a person, or threaten to beat them bloody? How many times does Benson imply that a person will get raped if they don't cooperate? And it wasn't just suspects. It was witnesses, victims even. The mentally ill. Women who had been brutalized. And they always got away with it. Cragen would cover their asses every time.

Due South, if you don't mind nineties stuff? He's very determined, but also very determined to be a decent man and treats the mentally ill with compassion and interest.

I've heard other good things about that series. I might just check it out. Thanks!
