I would refrain from actually saying anything, though. I've been on the other side (so to speak). I've read a slash fic with gen elements, it was described as slash from the beginning (but the slash part comes later in the story) and one of the comments was "it was fine but it would have been better if it wasn't slash" and I thought the reviewer was being a bit of an idiot. It wasn't homophobic but it really sounded like: "why aren't you catering to my tastes?".

More variety would be nice though, I think everyone agrees on that.

I'd critique if I found the execution of the slash bad, or if there was some blatantly false advertising going on, though I realize that gets tricky when everyone's definition of "gen" varies a bit; AO3 will let you mark a fic as both having pairings AND being gen which makes sense to some but not everyone, so I can see someone marking a fic where the main guy is in a loving relationship with another guy as "gen" because it doesn't get mentioned until the end and isn't important to the fic and boy would some readers get taken aback. On the other hand if the author was very clear there'd be no romance, or didn't mark for it when it ends up being a major thing, that's their bad. But if it's just that I thought it was one thing and it turned out to be another, it'd be kind of dumb to complain that I was mistaken.

Yanno, this reminds me of the time I got a comment like that yay long ago, for a fandom I'm not really active in anymore: the story was (largely one-sided) slash, and a person commented they wished the other character in the ship was the female version of the player character, because they -if I recall- "wanted to fantasize better", or some such like that.

It was totally stupid/unintentionally hilarious and "why aren't you writing what I want", but it didn't really strike me as homophobic.

Agreed. I think it's justified for the OP to feel let down and maybe express some general feeling of disappointment on their own time, but it'd be a little rude to complain directly at the author. Even if the story wasn't explicitly labeled at the start, that person has a right to write their fic however they want
