The way he says John doesn't really sound very different to me? Not enough to warrant people purposefully misspelling John. He says it the way I imagine John would be said.

I'm so confused now.

It doesn't sound that different to me either, but I think (read: more wild speculation) if someone without that accent tried to imitate it, that's how it would come out. Super-exaggerated. I'd guess that's probably the point - to exaggerate the word to make it obvious that it's supposed to be in an English accent.

(The IPA character I'm thinking of is ɒ, the open back rounded vowel.)

I don't have that accent (I have kind of a generic American accent, I guess) and I say John with an -aw sound. I think that's what's confusing me?

I'm confused too. I just spent the last five minutes saying 'John' over and over to figure out why anybody would misspell it like that.
