(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)It doesn't sound that different to me either, but I think (read: more wild speculation) if someone without that accent tried to imitate it, that's how it would come out. Super-exaggerated. I'd guess that's probably the point - to exaggerate the word to make it obvious that it's supposed to be in an English accent.
(The IPA character I'm thinking of is ɒ, the open back rounded vowel.)
