I wrote a long (novel-sized) fic that became a pairing fic, although I warned for it in the beginning (and it was obvious from the first chapter that one of the characters was attracted to the other). I didn't have a problem when people said "I liked it but not the romance so much" but it did bother me if people said "I would have liked it if it weren't a slash pairing" or "so-and-so is not gay." There's a difference between not caring for a certain genre vs. saying "I don't like X kind of people." Also, there is a difference between saying "I honestly don't think canon supports that this character is this sexuality" and saying "This character is cool and therefore can't be gay."
