But wouldn't just be trading it for a slightly different set of cliches?

I have yet to see a supernatural series that didn't at least touch upon existential angst.

Sometimes the romantic clichés are worse for more 'mature' shows because at least in a 'teen' show, when teenagers act like teenagers it's expected (I don't know how many times I've seen characters in an 'adult' show act like they were a teenager when relationship stuff comes up).

Job clichés tend to take the place of school issues.

Yeah, you got me on prom night, but, then again, I can think of a ton of big events that have taken place on any number of shows (fundraisers, galas, awards, balls, etc.).

Also, meddling parents isn't just a 'teen' thing and sometimes it's replaced or augmented by 'well-meaning' friends.
