I thought gen was also used for stories with pairings but no sexy scenes?...
As opposed to porn, you know, since most fics are such.

There's a variety of definitions for gen in fandom, but not everyone recognizes or knows all of them. A lot of people would be confused by it being used that way.

There's gen-the-rating, as in 'suitable for all' and then there's gen-the-genre, as in 'no sex, no romance'.

Unfortunately for people who like gen-the-genre, people who write gen-rated het and slash then label their stories with the gen label, making it darn near impossible for people to find gen-the-genre stories at all.

Last time I checked on AO3, the first page of 'gen' Sherlock stories had 11 slash and het stories included. Someone suggested adding -m/m and -m/f to the search. I tried that and the 11,000+ gen stories became 1,000 or so. I don't *think* the ratio is that extreme, so maybe I did something wrong.
