The only people calling Asian eyes slanted are non-Asian racists, since they're, you know, not slanted. Take what other people say about Asian physical features with a pinch of salt, you know, whatever language you speak.

I'm not Asian but I have such a strong association of "slanted" with racist dialogue about Asian people, I find it hard to believe that a decent, aware person such as you might not be wouldn't at least question this description, especially as Asian eyes are, you know, in whatever language you speak, STILL NOT SLANTED.

I'm sorry, but that's a...really strange remark.

I mean, I fully acknowledge that you have a very negative connotation with the word, and you have a right to - but I find it really weird you'd assume a non-English speaker would have the same sensitivity to words just because they would be "decent and aware". I definitely didn't get that gut reaction reading it, and I'd say my English is pretty okay as a rule. But fact is that even if you know the translation for a word, they might not have the connotation for that word that you have, positive or negative. It goes even further back to cultural sensitivities. Actually, I only even learned about blackface (and it being considered a bad thing in the US) on F!S, and I had celebrated Sinterklaas for nearly 3 decades without that connotation. (Google at your own risk, I'd say).

I think the one I've seen most often is "almond-shaped". That's not offensive, as far as I know.

(I don't really find "slanted" to be either, but I have no dog in this fight).

For the record, that "monofold" is an epicanthal fold, and depending on how much skin covers the eyelid (or in that chick's case, the inner corner), it can give the appearance of asymmetry. My sister's eyes do that and we make fun of her all the time for it. I like to think mine don't do that but they probably do.

So OP, I feel you. I don't get the racist vibe from you at all. I *do* get the racist vibe from SJ warriors taking it upon themselves to get offended on my behalf. Ugh.

Speaking as someone else who also does not get why having my eyes called slanted would be so offensive. Even if differently shaped eyes bother some for whatever reason, it's no justification to start getting all nasty and aggressive.

Can we please all calm down when it comes to online social justice and try to apply all this well-meaning energy to real life instead? Stopping voting for all those racist politicians would be a good start, instead of flaming our fellow fans anonymously...

I am NOT Asian and wouldn't presume to call something one thing or another to you, but my guess would be that this comes from a lot of racist language referring to Asians as 'slant-eyes' in the same breath as using other slurs.

From my (pasty white) seat it can strike me as the same tone racists use to refer to 'blacks' and the nasty tone given to the straight-out correct term 'Mexican'. The area of the south I'm from, all three I've heard with as much vitriol and a particular pronunciation that they sound like absolute swear words.

I am not whitesplaining at all, this is just what my guess would be as to where sensitivity to that word comes from?

Chill the fuck down! Different languages have different rules for what is offensive and what is not. For example, in my language "negr" is official, neutral word and "black" is slur. And you know what interesting? Their skin tone is, you know, in whatever language you speak, STILL NOT BLACK!
