I loved The Twelve Dancing Princesses when I was a kid. I disagreed with the ending though. I was convinced the soldier would marry the youngest princess, so him choosing the eldest made me peeved. When I was older, I realised that the princesses stayed silent while all those who failed to guess got beheaded. I could never look at the story the same way again.

I also have a deep love for Cinderella and the ton of movie versions there are out there. My favourites of those are "The Slipper and the Rose" and "The Glass Slipper".

Hans Christian Andersen's stories usually made me cry, especially The Little Matchgirl.

I think my favorite version of Cinderalla is the Chinese one, Ye Xian. We read it in elementary school and I can still picture the artwork in my head.

Ooh, thanks for that link! See? I always knew he should have picked the youngest. ::looks smug::

I found a copy of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" in a Golden Book in my 20s. Yes, I have a Golden Book stuffed somewhere. I like the tale, and the art used in it.

Also, you know the bit about the soldier choosing the eldest princess that struck me as Fridge Logic? Picking the eldest means he will also get the throne when the king dies. Sure, he'll probably only be her consort... but hey! Did anyone else ever see that one as well?

Not me. I was too peeved he picked the eldest, but that is a good point.

Late to the party, but my favourite version of the 12 Dancing Princesses was in one of Robin McKinley's short story collections. It adds some details that deal with the problems in the original--like that the princess were magically bound from speaking, and there was a connection between the retired soldier and the eldest princess.
