Out of curiosity, did anyone even try to fix his lazy eye? I ask because I had one that was way off (nearly 20° iirc) and got it fixed without surgery. I wore a patch and did eye exercises (stare at this from this angle, etc etc) and in about a year my eyes were perfectly aligned.

Yeah, he wore a patch as a toddler, and had some eye surgery (though I'm not sure if it was for that, for his astigmatism, or for something else - I was also a toddler at the time). He's also worn glasses/contacts since he was two. I do think his strabismus has improved over time, but I haven't asked him about it since, again, self-conscious. (He and I have kind of a weird relationship right now and we're not super close. We can talk extensively about some personal things and totally avoid others.) If an opening arises I may ask him out of curiosity.
