I would absolutely adore having an 'everybody lives' alternate ending! Though I think that Thorin/Kili/Fili surviving the BoFA would change the timeline too much for it to be a canon ending, even for the movieverse.

Ugh, but everybody-lives-AUs are everywhere in fic. It feels like fics actually following (book!)canon are the original thing now...

Yeah, but I've been waiting for those fics since I was but a wee eight year old reading The Hobbit for the first time. I can handle the schmoop. :) Besides, since the canon ending is definitely going to be sad (and the movie itself very likely to be bad) I'd like to have a little happy bonus for buying the DVD.

I wouldn't. Yes, it's absolutely gut-wrenching when characters we love die, but the point of adapting Tolkien's work isn't to eliminate everything bad that could ever happen to them. (That's what fanfiction is for.) "Fixing" the sad parts by rewriting the story so there's no death, no sacrifice, no terrible consequences for fighting the good fight... that's totally missing the point, especially in the LOTR universe.

Which is why I want it as an alternate ending. I understand that what happened was right for the story as it is... but I also want to have my cutesy happy universe. That doesn't mean that I expect (or even want) it as the real ending.

I understand. But I still think that's what fanfiction is for. If the movies stay true to the books, it'll likely spawn dozens if not hundreds of happy alternate endings, which is why the Hobbit movies don't need to film one.
