I would absolutely adore having an 'everybody lives' alternate ending! Though I think that Thorin/Kili/Fili surviving the BoFA would change the timeline too much for it to be a canon ending, even for the movieverse.

TBH I thought they'd added in the romance partially to make the whole thing more depressing, especially for the people who know what's coming. But then I'm one of those awful human beings who finds completely happy endings anti-climactic.

Naaaah, Thorin still needs to die.

Kili, I don't know. It would seem a waste after the whole being-saved-from-the-Morgul-blade thing.

Fili... fuck, I don't know. And don't really care. Sorry, cute-ish-dwarf-that's-blond-and-not-Kili.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
well wasn't the hobbit book more for kids anyway? and they still died lol. i think it would be too much of a change to let them live. it's not like they are minor side characters with no hand in the happenings of dwarves.

I think with a bit of adjustment, it could be done in a non-anticlimactic way. Like Boromir's death, where we see his fight onscreen and everything.

I'm of two minds about it:

On one hand: if they follow canon, I want to actually see the action, rather than hear about it after the fact because Bilbo was knocked out. If they do that, I would personally be fine with them following canon.

On the other hand: My Mum is really into these movies, and is kind of fangirling about them/Thorin (not like, internet communities-and-fanstuff fangirling, but still), and I really am not looking forward to seeing her cry at the movie theater, so I wouldn't be too pissed if they changed it, or had an alternate ending on a blue ray or DVD.

The Rankin/Bass Hobbit cartoon was even more of a children's movie than this and they killed off even more dwarves than the book did. Poor Bombur!

And I don't really trust Jackson & company not to do the same. I think that's far more likely than everybody somehow miraculously lives (which I wouldn't want anyway). I don't want any more than the book deaths, but then I remember what they did to Haldir and think that pretty much all the dwarves except Balin, Oin, and Ori are fair game.

EVERYTHING! I DID NOT GO THROUGH ALL THOSE MINUTES OF TORMENT IN THE SECOND MOVIE TO HAVE HIM DIE IN THE THIRD ONE!

But yeah, the delicious, delicious tears of book purists would be wonderful, too.

spoilers!!!

jk, but seriously the films are so different from the books at this point that I don't even care if they change the ending; it's already a different story imo
but the fandom meltdown would be awesome: on one hand 'yissss my babies live' but on the other hand 'peter jackson what have u done u horrible sell-out tolkien is rolling in his grave'

They followed cannon with regards to who lives and who dies in LotR, so I think it's likely they'll do the same here (sadly).

I do like the 'everyone lives' AU's in fanon but I'm not sure I'd actually want that in canon, I kind of want to heartbroken and crying my eyes out in the cinema. Which is a weird thing to say.

Actually, after all the character build-up and emotional interaction in the movies, I want the tragic book ending more. Because in the book, it was terribly sad, but oddly distant, while in the movieverse it's gonna rip hearts out. Emotional payoff, oh yes.

Although ... I'd be okay if Fili and Kili survived, maybe. In the book, their deaths were largely to set up the era of peace by removing the direct line of succession and thus forcing the likes of Dain and Bard to work together in their absence and inspired by their sacrifice. Maybe that wouldn't be necessary in the movies.

But Thorin has to die. He really, really does. Everything that happens between him and Bilbo over the Arkenstone is what sets up Bilbo to be the hobbit who resists the Ring for decades afterwards, and Thorin's last words directly salute Bilbo for being able to resist the lure of gold and making the world merrier for it. Thorin's death is what shows Bilbo the price of gold lust, and I honestly believe it's why Bilbo, of all the Ring-bearers, was the one who was capable of simply giving it up on demand, even after decades of its influence. Thorin's death, his struggles and his madness and his dying redemption, were part of what shaped the War of the Ring. Even leaving aside how much I just want the tragic emotional payoff at the end, I also think that Bilbo wouldn't have been the hobbit he was later if it wasn't for Thorin and Thorin's end, and I wouldn't want to lose that.

Yeah, I think Thorin, Fili and Kili are getting the chop, but tears of book purists is a pretty good reason to make a change...

I'm not looking forward to them dying, but I managed to survive Boromir dying (and he was one of my favorites too) so bring on the canon ending! Fanfic solves everything.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I would not mind that at all considering the movie universe is hardly canon anymore.

Hell, why not. It's not like Peter Jackson has ever hesitated to shit all over Tolkien's works in the past.

Looking back at Desolation of Smaug and its almost Final Destination levels of creative orc deaths, I'm tickled that you see the movies as "more kid-friendly".

Given how much they've changed, I wouldn't be surprised if Kili lives, but I think they'll still kill off the other two :( My feels!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
There's no way that's going to happen, though. Everything they've changed and added thus far has been fluff and fripperies as far as I'm concerned, but the canon ending has too much dramatic potential (and fandom-stirring potential) and I'm 100% certain they're going to go there. All the foreshadowing proves it.

Everyone-lives! is for fanfic, OP.

They've already...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
...turned it into a stinking pile of orc shit, so why not?

Did you just make the argument that characters can't die because it would be sad?

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more waiting to see how they will handle Thorin falling for the lure of the dragon treasure and basically going half mad and full paranoid. The deaths are secondary, but I think it would really cheapen all the build-up if he survived.

I'm pretty sure Kili will die taking a hit for Tauriel, probably even as soon as the Smaug battle. That sounds like the standard solution for this kind of relationship. Why else would they do through all this trouble of placing him in her vicinity instead of following the book?

Fili, I don't know and I don't care, either way.

I'm also interested if they mention the "Thranduil's face is half burned off and he appears blind in at least one eye" ever again or if they just threw this in there for the lulz.
