I hope they do go with the book ending. Changing what happens would completely bastardize the adaptation and they've changed enough already imo. I love the dwarves, but having the whole thing end all happy would cheapen the experience for me. :/

Fanfic is there for happy endings and "fixing" things. If they do an alternate ending--I don't see why they would because that's time, money, and resources and they'd have to change the entire final battle and do aftermath--that would be fine, but I don't see movies because I want happy endings all the time. There are some things I expect out of book adaptations, and not completely changing the ending is one of them.
