I do like the 'everyone lives' AU's in fanon but I'm not sure I'd actually want that in canon, I kind of want to heartbroken and crying my eyes out in the cinema. Which is a weird thing to say.

I agree. If I don't cry all my makeup off in the cinema, I'll be disappointed. I like a good 'everyone lives' AU, but without the death and sacrifice and sorrow in the original, I wouldn't have ever loved the story so much to start with. The heartbreak makes the hope more meaningful, and the story wouldn't resonate so much with me without the sad bits.
