I roll my eyes when writers talk about multi-season story arcs. Not only does it seems rather... stupidly optimistic, but it seems like an excuse to stretch things out--often to a ridiculous degree--instead of giving us at least SOME resolution. This is one of the reasons I find it annoying when my fellow Sherlock fans talking about the writers playing "The Long Game". Ya know what? Fuck your "Long Game". Entertainment is supposed to be FUN, and I don't find waiting season after season for something important to happen fun in any way. Resolve SOMETHING. Give us SOME answers.

I strongly disagree. I think the best shows -- at least dramatic, story-based ones with episode-to-episode continuity -- have multi-season arcs, or even myth arcs (series-long story arcs). Obviously a lack of resolution is bad, but I think it's more a flaw of poor writing or poor communication between the showrunners/writers, as opposed to a flaw inherent to multi-season arcs. Look at The X-Files, or DS9, or Babylon 5. They had stories that arced over seasons and series, and they were great.

Your point still stands about a lack of resolution, though; that really hurt The X-Files in the later seasons. I think the key to successful multi-season arcs/myth arcs/long-awaited payoffs tends to be a competent writer or team of writers, who know what their end goal is and don't drag the waiting out past its welcome.

On an on-topic note, I definitely don't think Hannibal should go for seven seasons. I think it'd be much better with a tighter, more contained story. Don't kill this good thing pls Fuller.

Actually, X-Files is one of the reasons I have this opinion. Not only did it drag out but it started feeling like the writers had no real end game, and eventually just started making shit up.

I'm not against story arcs, even multi-season ones. But so many shows don't seem to do it very well. And, again resolution... So many shows bring back the same old villains or rehash conflicts that were long since dead, which makes those previous story lines feel unresolved.

AYRT: Yeah, that's true. I've just been lucky in that the arc-heavy shows I've watched have been great, or have at least done the arcs well, so I'm coming from a different place.

umm Breaking Bad much? Pretty much my favourite show of all time and it was one big long cohesive storyline. I mean, sure, Gus and the neo-Nazis ended their respective seasons like boss battles but they also slipped into the story under the radar during mid-season eps.
