Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?

Imo, "Blink" relies on "GOTCHA!" scares which get old after the first couple of views. I mean, it's supposed to be awful that these people get sent back in time, but as far as what we actually see in the episode... they all have pretty decent lives even though one of the people sent back is a woman and another person sent back is a black man. So the show doesn't seem to be interested in exploring those inequalities at all.

"Midnight" though... I just LOVE seeing humanity's darkside. I love the idea that we never see the creature or find out what it is. And if the creature is just repeating or copying humans then everything the monster does can be seen as a reflection of humanity. I think the episode also shows why the Doctor needs his companions. Without Donna there to act as a buffer, he seemed a lot more suspicious to the other and he didn't have anyone there to stick up for him. And then the Hostess's sacrifice is beautiful.

I think Blink does a better job of building tension, and the jump scares are effective for that reason. Jump scares don't instantly equal bad horror, they're usually just cheap horror, but the episode really invests in the fear.

But I agree the fact that they don't kill you or do anything bad to you is not as scary. Tragic, but not scary. I think most DW fans kid themselves when they think this is somehow more effective than actual danger, because they didn't like how much Moffat raised the stakes in the Series 5 Angels, and believe everything about Blink was better.
