Anyone got ASOIAF fic recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished A Dance With Dragons and I want moooooore. So, anyone got recs? Preferably long and plotty, light on the romance; no modern-day AUs unless they're super awesome!

Alternatively, any published-fiction recommendations? I've just read the entire series back-to-back and y'know when you've been immersed in one story for so long that afterwards, everything else you pick up just fails to grab you? So something new to sink my teeth into would be great! Especially fond of fantasty and historical fiction but I'll give anything a whirl :)

Have you read any Lois McMaster Bujold? Or Guy Gavriel Kay?

Never heard of Guy Gavriel Kay, and he looks awesome - thank you! I tried a couple of Bujold's Vorlosigan Saga books a while back and wasn't massively keen, but that's going back a few years so might be worth another go, or maybe some of her other stuff; any in particular you'd recommend?

My favorite Bujold book is The Curse of Chalion, and I started reading Kay with his Tigana and maybe that will work for you too. His Sarantine Mosaic (a duology) and The Lions of Al-Rassan are good too.

The Curse of Chalion does look more up my street, will definitely give that a go. Thank you again, library trip due tomorrow I think!

Off topic: I'm reading Falling Free by Lois McMaster Bujold right now and it's awesome!

I haven't read any other books by her but I'm going to move through the series I think.

I have one fic that is a Brienne/Jaime. Really long and written well. I can find it when I get home.

That'd be awesome and very appreciated, thank you!

That looks great! I did adore Brienne :D

Someone's going to rec Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, which, eh, I suppose you could try it. Personally I think it's a giant steaming turd of a series, poorly written and poorly plotted.

Guy Gavriel Kay for the epic fantasy with bunches of world building. Dave Duncan for clever, plotty books with lots of swordfighting. Robin Hobb's Assassin and Tawny Man trilogies for fantasy with shape-shifters that will break your heart.

Ah, I love Robin Hobb. Also just checked out Kay and he looks like just my sort of thing - and never heard of Duncan but you had me sold at plot and swordfighting, will have to look him up.

Also, note to self: don't necessarily believe the hype about Robert Jordan haha.

Thank you! :D

+1

For the love of fuck, don't read The Wheel of Time. It's awful.

There's an old series that I've recommended to ASoIaF fans looking for a fix, Otherland by Tad Williams. It's incredibly long. And creepy. And finished!

Thank you! I've never heard of it, which is slightly odd since I read and adored The Dragonbone Chair trilogy a few years ago - mustn't have gone ferreting for his other stuff, most unlike me lol. Shall definitely check it out (...and possibly re-read the Dragonbone Chair too while I'm at it...)

Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards series is fun in a crazy "big heist movie in a fantasy setting" way.

Ha, I've had The Lies of Locke Lamora sat on my shelf for about two years waiting to be read. (I am very bad for this; Good Omens was sat there for at least three or four before I finally got round to it and now it's one of my go-to favourites...)Maybe this is a sign to pick it up next. Thanks!

If you are interested in historical fiction set in the European Middle Ages, you could try Zoe Oldenbourg's Heirs of the Kingdom, The World is Not Enough, The Cornerstone, and Destiny of Fire; or Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter (try the new translation by Tiina Nunnally unless you like your prose clotted with deliberate archaisms, in which case go for the 1923 translation, it still has its charms), the much shorter Gunnar's Daughter (badass heroine alert) and The Master of Hestviken; or Jane Smiley's The Greenlanders, or Julia O'Faolain's The Women in the Wall.

There's also saga literature, from the period itself: Njal's Saga, Egil's Saga, and The Saga of the People of Laxardal are some of the best known.

You might also like The Tale of the Heike.

Wow, thanks so much - I'll go look some of them up, enough to keep me going for a while there!

Have you read Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Dunk_and_Egg) novellas?

Also, I second Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards!

Didn't know they existed! Thank you :D
