I get what you're saying, but I don't agree. Yes, people set a/b/o up differently and have different worlds and politics, BUT. The fundamental idea that people are biologically programmed into rigid sexual roles which they have no control over and no ability to change is always present. That, to me, is the squickiest part, and it's also an essential part of the genre.

Good bdsm emphasises choice, and works with characterisation. A/b/o erases these things.

Eh, not really. I've seen ABO that actually deconstructs or reconstructs the tropes so that choice and characterization matter. Like seeing how different characters deal with these things and learn to respect each other. But there's plenty of mindless smut too. ABO is pretty much a huge mixed bag.

Sure, you can see how different characters deal with things and learn to respect each other, but still, they have no choice. Their sexual/romantic fate is predetermined and basically they either accept it or they're fucked. (Or not, I guess, but whatever.) Taking away someone's autonomy is never, ever, ever going to be non-squicky to me. Even if they discuss it and end up accepting it.

Yuuuuup. This is what bothers me about abo. I hate soulmate/soulbond fics too, for the same reason.

I personally have a real fondness for the soulmate/soulbondtrope, but what I dislike is how so many fics use it as a way of forcing the characters into a relationship, like having a bond automatically means they will fall in love, no matter what.

I like the idea of a bond that does not force anything, it merely allows another avenue of communication. Any romance between the two can be enhanced by that avenue of communication, but not caused by it.

I have also seen the odd fic with omegas who like omegas or alphas who like alphas, and more than a few where omegas aren't always submissive and alphas aren't always dominant.

I guess that's fair. There is a lot of that in ABO. But I've seen others where its not like that and they don't have to be "soulmates 2gether 4evah" or whatever, because it's not fun for me if they don't have some kind of choice. I'm just saying it's a mixed bag.

You've not read any quality A/B/O, I take it. Most of them that aren't straight up porn actually deal with the societal problems and address how awful it is to fit those roles. Hidden A/B/O characters are practically a subtrope by this point.

I don't really get your point, sorry. Granted, you're right that I haven't read much quality a/b/o - I avoid it most of the time and regret it everytime I do give it a try, but nonetheless, I have seen fic trying to deal with the societal problems and how awful it is to fit into the roles, as you say, but the roles are still there in those. It's not the mindless porn a/b/o fics that bother me, it's the idea of a/b/o in itself.

I can see how people might be interested in reading about these worlds, and in deconstructing them, but I find them disturbing and uninteresting - not to mention completely unrepresentative of what makes the canon appealing in the first place.

I completely understand why you're squicked. I sometimes feel shame at the fact that I'm not squicked. But the fact that there's an imperative adds to the appeal for me, and so I can understand why it developed.
