Obviously your kinks have something to do with your personality, but where they come from and what parts of your past, associations, and beliefs they're engaging is complex. Ten people with the same kink can like it for completely different reasons. And when society comes up with an (oversimplified) stereotype about "why anyone would find this hot," it's invariably misrepresenting most of the people who actually have it. So, while kinks are intensely personal, the fastest way to alienate most people with that kink is by assuming you know what it "says about them." Hence, fandom etiquette recommends not going there.
