I'm white British. My great-great-grandfather was African-American (or at least listed as 'black' on US records, he might have been mixed race).

At the time he came to England, slavery was still legal in the US, but abolished in the UK. Our family thinks that might be one reason why he came.

I bet there are quite a few white British people with black ancestors from this time period, just they don't know it. The cost of travelling here would have been very expensive, otherwise there might have been even more.
