I have the same thing but about young girls. I am really close to my nieces and just, no. One of the creepy podcasts I listen to had a story involving a young girl and it made my stomach drop to my feet.

I hope this isn't insensitive in context, but do you have recs for good creepy podcasts? I love horror and I'm on the lookout for some.

Thanks a lot!

Are you only affected by having the mothers die in the story or does that also include mothers who are already dead prior to the story's beginning (like if the protagonist is already set up as an orphan)?
When I was little I was fascinated by orphan movies for some reason, because I always wondered how these kids found the courage to live without parents until/if they get adopted. I'm close to my parents and I think the death of loved ones is a fear everyone has, so you're not alone, OP.

This secret bummed me out.

I don't really have any real response except that. It's a bummer. Mothers dying are a bummer.

I think I understand, OP. I too have an extremely close relationship with my mother, and I get horribly, irrationally worried about her (especially since someone in my family died recently - it's probably getting unhealthy at this point). So, er, I don't know. Hugs, OP.

Hugs if wanted, OP. I'm close to my mom too. I don't know what I'd do without her. But I'm sure she would want you to live on after her and be happy.

I'm kind of the same way when characters lose their younger siblings. I have lots of little siblings, and I'm pretty close to them and have done a lot of looking out for them. I'm helping raise the youngest two, and the older ones are absolutely my best friends. I don't avoid such plotlines (sometimes I seek them out if they're well written/acted/constructed/played), but they hit a particular narrative nerve and seem very very real.

It really bothers me when a little sister gets fridged; I get kind of angry at the writer. It's like, do you have any idea what you're actually doing to your character? You're not setting up a tragic backstory, you're destroying her/his life.

It's okay, we all have things like that. They're not especially rational and they're not emotionally fair, but we've got 'em anyway. Don't beat yourself up or think you're the only one. :)

I guess no-one else read the so-grey-it's-almost-black part of the secret?

I get you OP, I really do. I'm closer to my mum than I am to any other person in the world, and I know I'll fall completely apart without her. I do know one other thing for certain though, and that is that my mum would want me to pick myself up and go on to live the best life I can make for myself. Listen to me now, because this is important: your mum does not want you to kill yourself if she dies before you! She loves you, and she wants you to live on without her. Trust me on this one, OP. It will be the hardest thing you ever do, but living without your mum will also be the greatest gift you can ever give her.

If you feel like this is impossible, think about the people around you. Would there be someone you could lean on if something happened to her? Is there someone you can talk to about this? If not, you may want to think about a help line or something similar, because those are some really strong emotions you have there. I do understand you though, completely. ALL THE HUGS IN THE WORLD!
