I'm kind of the same way when characters lose their younger siblings. I have lots of little siblings, and I'm pretty close to them and have done a lot of looking out for them. I'm helping raise the youngest two, and the older ones are absolutely my best friends. I don't avoid such plotlines (sometimes I seek them out if they're well written/acted/constructed/played), but they hit a particular narrative nerve and seem very very real.

It really bothers me when a little sister gets fridged; I get kind of angry at the writer. It's like, do you have any idea what you're actually doing to your character? You're not setting up a tragic backstory, you're destroying her/his life.
