I've always said that no one is obligated to be a role model. They can be, and I have several fictional role models, but I don't treat every character like one. Most of them are just there for the plot.

Also, choosing love is a wonderful choice. Love isn't the easy way out, and there's no reason a person can't start over with ambition. You don't stop being ambitious just because you're in love.

Agreed. What even is this secret?

The secret made me think of Bella, whose only ambition ended up being "love" with Edward. She didn't care about college, a career, hobbies, friends, maintaining a relationship with her parents, nothing. Everything was about Edward and that is a terrible message.

But that's just one example and you're right that in a normal relationship, love doesn't exclude ambition.

OH god. Bella doesn't count. Bella doesn't count for anything. The moment that girl chose "ravenous goth family who lusts for my blood" over "nice wolves who make gigantic blueberry muffins and probably won't eat me" she stopped mattering.

lol can't argue with that

seeeeee I disagree with this. I mean. the whole setup was bad, but whatever people will say about Edward, at least he didn't ASSAULT her. that scene with Jacob forcing a kiss on her and laughing when she punched him and not even acting like he was sorry was so awful and made me really dislike his character for the rest of the books.

the wolves were far from perfect. their total dudebro culture was just kind of...ick. (didn't help that the only female wolf was written as a whiny brat.)

total dudebro culture

A total dudebro culture of NOT EATING HUMANS. And while the kiss was awful, it's at least awful in a normal way, you know? He wasn't, I don't know, crawling into her room every night to lurk over her bed and watch her sleep.

These are two shitty choices but one is normal-shitty.

I'm kind of confused about the "NOT EATING HUMANS" thing since the whole point of Edward's family's lifestyle was...not eating humans?

I think it has more to do with what they're comfortable with...yes, Edward's behavior is really fucking creepy, but Bella wasn't (that I recall - correct me if I'm wrong) actually bothered by it. (Which is an issue in itself because Bella is a terrible character, but I digress.) Jacob went explicitly against her wishes and didn't take her seriously when she got upset. Subjectively, that bothered me a lot more, because of how it obviously upset Bella and I'm really big on personal space issues I guess...

since the whole point of Edward's family's lifestyle was...not eating humans?

Look at it this way: they have to make a conscious lifestyle choice to NOT EAT PEOPLE

I'm still really not sure what your point is with this. What does that have to do with the relationship bits? And to be completely objective about it, it's still technically not their fault that they're vampires. (Well, some of them changed others on purpose which is arguably Really Bad, but that's not the case with all of them)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
She's STILL not obligated to be a role model. She wants to make her life about her partner, she can do that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
You say this about real people. Characters are not real people, and in books targeting young girls, yeah, they should have decent role models.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
In my opinion, people need to stop looking to FICTIONAL CHARACTER to be role models and start looking at real life people. There are plenty of strong women of all types in real life a little girl (or boy) can look up too.

I don't think the young girls are the ones at fault that this isn't happening, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't the books' fault either. Parents shoould smack some sense into their young girls' head demanding other people do their job for them.
Also Twilight is YA. It's for adults, who should be able to tell what's fiction and what's reality. If they don't, they don't need a role model, they need a psychiatrist.

*INSTEAD OF demanding
Keyboard totally ate my comment.

No, I totally agree with this. The parents need to play a much bigger role here.

Despite the name, YA actually means books for teenagers.
