That's the thing though. People react differently to fiction because their personality and experiences are very different from each other. People who are very attached to the concept of family and family values will probably feel closer to Dean and not relate to Sam like you do.

While I definitely agree with you, your comment made me realize I'm odd about this. About this issue, I can certainly relate to Sam and barely to Dean, yet I identify with Dean the most. So you left me wondering what that's about...

I don't know, anon. I don't think it makes you odd though; I'm sure it happens to other people too.

You're not weird! I identify with Sam the most (youngest child, not on the same wavelength with my siblings and parents about some family stuff, strong independent streak) - but Dean is by far my favourite and I relate to him far more than I do with Sam.

Part of it for me is that I always relate to super protective characters, especially ones who are goofy and/or gruff on the outside. And then the rest is probably because I just think Jensen Ackles does an amazing acting job as Dean and I always enjoy his performance. So yeah, I think it's just a matter of personal preferences - nothing to worry about.

...uhhhhhmmm...no ?

I said 'probably'. It doesn't negate the feelings of people who don't feel that way.

Nope, Sam is a terrible, terrible, person for having intellectual leanings and career goals that don't include being Dean's sidekick for life. Don't you know that you can't simultaneously be close to your family and go to college?

mte. i'm reallyyyy not attached to family values in any way and dean is one of my favorite characters ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
another possibility: people who relate strongly to Sam could be people who dealt with the fallout of escaping a dysfunctional situation, and Dean the ones who dealt with staying in one.

Interesting. When I first started watching the series at the behest of a friend, she was certain (as was I) that I would identify with Sam since I'm quite a nerd. But I identify more with Dean. I see the reasons being 1) older sibling in a shitty family dynamic who had to protect the younger sibling at the expense of her(in Dean's case him)self and 2) never getting to have a normal life of my own because of this experience, which leaves me, as an adult, with few coping skills except to "soldier on and deal."

I'd not see myself as being more traditional.

My sister, being the "Sam" to my "Dean," didn't turn out as independent at Sam. I kind of wish she had. She relies on me a great deal to help her emotionally. I will and would do anything for her, forever, because I view her as more my child than sibling, but that leaves me with nothing for myself.

I always wonder how Sam was able to handle life on his own when raised in such a way. My sister tried but couldn't do it.

I don't blame Sam either; he wanted to do something different with his life and he took his chance. While I understand wanting to stay close to one's family, I also totally get wanting to do your own thing and branch out. Neither option is wrong.

So this is a secret because you're not supposed to care about Supernatural any more, right? not because you prefer one brother over the other? because I'm pretty sure you're in the majority there.

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-02-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
could also be secret due to how they feel about their family. maybe it's something they tend not to like to admit, so they say 'i prefer sam because of x' rather than tell the truth.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i glanced at this too quickly and thought it was a the drowned man secret at first...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You and me both, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The first couple seasons of this show, before everything got really wacky, the dynamic between Sam and Dean really reminded me of the dynamic between me and my younger brother. I have a personality kind of like Sam's, and my brother is a LOT like Dean, but when it comes to roles I'm the Dean to his Sam.

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-02-16 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
i identify very strongly with this. not with the sam love so much since i've never really been in to supernatural, but with college being an escsape from family.

i guess i just wanted yoy to know that someone else has felt similar things to you, op.

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Gondremark whose life was kind of bonkers, so he thought he could escape all of it by going to a college far away from his family. That lasted for about two years, but then crappy stuff happened and ended up right back in the midst of his bonkers family where it all started, and he's essentially raising his baby sister.

I watch this show for more reasons than just the exploding ghosts.

I did the same, or actually I am doing it right now*... Except luckily (?) my siblings live in good foster homes and I don't have to take care of them, now if the rest of my family could grow the fuck up...

Anyway if you want anyone to talk to I'm around!

*I moved 6 hours away from most of my family, then because of a heap of reasons my mother ended up living in my flat twice for months and she is still leaning on me to fix everything.

I thought I would prefer Sam, I did when I watched Supernatural when it started airing, I stopped watching and now rewatching it and catching up on it, I go from being unreasonable angry at Sam for his choices to just tolerating him.

Not that going away to college and trying to have a normal life is something that I judge him for, I'm doing the same. It is the abandoning his family part* I can't stand, because for me that is one of the worst* things a person can do.

*Like when Dean was in Purgatory and Sam didn't even try to look for him, not that he didn't talk to his family while he was away at college.

*There are off course exceptions, if your family are violent, seriously abusive and such get out, leave them and never look back.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny, I actually hate both Sam and Dean (I'm only watching because my friend is bizarrely insistent upon it, but I'm thinking about dropping it because it just makes me mad anymore), but the one thing I probably can't get over is how badly Sam originally got fucked over. He had every right to escape.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Good yes. Bless you for understanding and not faulting Sam for wanting to live his own life.
