That's the thing though. People react differently to fiction because their personality and experiences are very different from each other. People who are very attached to the concept of family and family values will probably feel closer to Dean and not relate to Sam like you do.

While I definitely agree with you, your comment made me realize I'm odd about this. About this issue, I can certainly relate to Sam and barely to Dean, yet I identify with Dean the most. So you left me wondering what that's about...

I don't know, anon. I don't think it makes you odd though; I'm sure it happens to other people too.

You're not weird! I identify with Sam the most (youngest child, not on the same wavelength with my siblings and parents about some family stuff, strong independent streak) - but Dean is by far my favourite and I relate to him far more than I do with Sam.

Part of it for me is that I always relate to super protective characters, especially ones who are goofy and/or gruff on the outside. And then the rest is probably because I just think Jensen Ackles does an amazing acting job as Dean and I always enjoy his performance. So yeah, I think it's just a matter of personal preferences - nothing to worry about.

I said 'probably'. It doesn't negate the feelings of people who don't feel that way.

Nope, Sam is a terrible, terrible, person for having intellectual leanings and career goals that don't include being Dean's sidekick for life. Don't you know that you can't simultaneously be close to your family and go to college?

AYRT

Actually I was thinking "family and family values" is probably the most exact opposite thing a slash fan could be. Maybe that's judgemental of me IDK.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol
so not only is everyone who watches supernatural a slasher, slashers are... immoral? are you lost?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, considering the disturbing quantity of incest slash that goes down in the fandom, lost anon isn't entirely off the mark....

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well as a Dean/Castiel shipper... Anyway I see more incest here than I do in spn.

It's almost like you believe people cannot separate their Real Life morals from what they read.

Surprisingly, an incest fan can still disapprove of Real Life incest, since most Real Life incest is bad and nothing like the fantasy fanfic usually has.

Separating Real Life from Fantasy? Umpossible!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Only if the republicans have actually trademarked family values now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
mte. i'm reallyyyy not attached to family values in any way and dean is one of my favorite characters ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
another possibility: people who relate strongly to Sam could be people who dealt with the fallout of escaping a dysfunctional situation, and Dean the ones who dealt with staying in one.

Interesting. When I first started watching the series at the behest of a friend, she was certain (as was I) that I would identify with Sam since I'm quite a nerd. But I identify more with Dean. I see the reasons being 1) older sibling in a shitty family dynamic who had to protect the younger sibling at the expense of her(in Dean's case him)self and 2) never getting to have a normal life of my own because of this experience, which leaves me, as an adult, with few coping skills except to "soldier on and deal."

I'd not see myself as being more traditional.

My sister, being the "Sam" to my "Dean," didn't turn out as independent at Sam. I kind of wish she had. She relies on me a great deal to help her emotionally. I will and would do anything for her, forever, because I view her as more my child than sibling, but that leaves me with nothing for myself.

I always wonder how Sam was able to handle life on his own when raised in such a way. My sister tried but couldn't do it.
