...wait, is that one of those groups that has chosen their own One True Pope(s)? Google gave me an article that I couldn't make heads or tails of...but if you've ever read up on the One True Pope (sometimes they're No True Pope eeeeehhhh it's complicated) people/groups/sub-groups, it's hilarious.

The long and extreme short of is that the SSPX was fed up with the changes post-Vatican II, so they went off and formed their own club that's very traditional/pre-Vatican II (i.e. Masses in Latin, et all). Likewise, they're technically not recognized by the Catholic Church, but it's one of those "it's complicated" situations that's a bit above my paygrade of understanding. Some of us Catholics do occasionally joke that they're "more Catholic than the Pope", haha.

There have been attempts to mend the fence with them over the years (like they did with certain branches of the Anglican church), but AFAIK, nothing's ever stuck for reasons I'm not 100% sure of.

tl;dr: It's really, really complicated, lmao.
