I think you were disappointed because the book build up the hype so much and so your expectations were too high. If you had heard the song before reading the book your impression may have been different.
I've had it happen to me before: I had someone who loved something ramble on about how great the thing was, and when I eventually checked out the thing it just didn't feel that great to me.
