How Soon Is Now is kind of a massively overrated Smiths song IMO (just trying to get the Smiths fan arguments started ASAP)

so maybe try listening to some of their other songs and seeing if they do anything for you? or maybe it's just not for you

I've read that book.(Wasn't too keen on the ending. Too abrupt. Though it turns out, while Morrisey was living in California, you could do exactly what they wanted to do. Walk up to his house and say, "hi."

Still, The Smiths have better songs than "How soon is now?" It's worth going through their discography. It may actually be a tipping point to find out similar bands to them. For example, if you like The Smiths, try The Drums, Echo and The Bunnymen, New Order and Bye Bye Bicycle,

I once saw Morrissey at a Trader Joe's, but I didn't walk up and say hi.

I actually love this book, it's one of my favorites, but like someone else said I hated the ending as well.

I read it after I already became a Smiths fan but The Smiths are my favorite band, and I do agree HSIN? is quite overrated, I would try listening to other songs. My favorite is "Rubber Ring"

I think you were disappointed because the book build up the hype so much and so your expectations were too high. If you had heard the song before reading the book your impression may have been different.
I've had it happen to me before: I had someone who loved something ramble on about how great the thing was, and when I eventually checked out the thing it just didn't feel that great to me.

I'm a huge Smiths fan and even I don't like that song. Try "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" or "This Charming Man" to get you started.

I was just going to recommend those two as well!

This Charming Man was my first thought. It often feels like it's the most popular Smiths song among people who are Smiths fans? Maybe that's just my impression.

Other thoughts include Half A Person, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, Bighead Strikes Again, and obv Girlfriend In A Coma.

Bigmouth Strikes Again.

i commiserate, op, i like the smiths fine, but i just could not get into either velvet underground or the manic street preachers and that gave my NME reading, late teens self so much anxiety.

I've never read that book, but I'm going to echo the overrated-ness of "How Soon Is Now." I love Morrissey and the Smiths, but it's never been one of my favorite songs. (I actually quite enjoy t.A.T.u's cover of the song more than the original.)

Favorites of mine are "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," "This Charming Man," "Ask," "The Headmaster Ritual," and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before."

While I don't mind How Soon Is Now (I can never hate on a song with the lyric 'So you go to the bar on your own/ ANd you leave on your own/ And you go home/ You cry and you want to die', lol), I definitely think there are better songs to start with. Definitely seconding This Charming Man, There is a Light That Never Goes Out and Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, but my other faves are Ask, Sheila Take A Bow, Panic, Girlfriend In A Coma, Cemetery Gates (so much love for this song), Bigmouth Strikes Again (so good!), The Boy With the Thorn in His Side, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, Hand in Glove... I could go on. I'd recommend putting a greatest hits playlist on in the background while you're doing something else and see whether any appeal to you.

Cemetery Gates is my jam

I really feel like The Queen Is Dead (the album) is, in a really weird way, perfect Saturday morning music. You know, you're just hanging out cooking breakfast and chilling.

I danced many many times to How Soon Is Now in nightclubs in my tender years and never ever got sick of it. Maybe because I could really relate to the lyrics. I like other Smiths stuff but I just love that one musically and lyrically.

OTOH I'm a huge Joy Division fan for whom Love Will Tear Us Apart does very little for. Feel my pain.
