I'm currently playing Hacx, which was a commercial mod for Doom 2 (like, you needed Doom 2 to run it.) It came out the year after Quake and was rushed out the door, and because of that was a huge flop -- but several of the developers have gone on to be quite famous, Iikka Keranen especially. It was released for free a while back and then updated to work in modern source ports like GZDoom (which is what I'm using.)

It's pretty fun. It's got a slightly unfinished feel to it, but the gameplay is solid without feeling too much like Doom (the chaingun has been replaced with an SMG that chews through ammo like you wouldn't believe, and the SSG replacement actually reloads faster than Doom's original shotgun!)

I have plans to get back into Skyrim, replay GTA San Andreas, and of course Heretic and Hexen are coming up too.

I see it's always a Doom engine, are they all correlated? I loved Doom, I remember playing it as a kid and it was terribly atmospheric. The jumps that game made me do, god.

Skyrim is a potential new buy, I can't resist. Tumblr has made me weak with all those posts about it.

Doom was one of those early games that got licensed out to other developers a lot. id did it with Wolfenstein as well -- the Wolf 3D engine saw use in Blake Stone, Corridor 7 and, most notably, Rise of the Triad; Doom, meanwhile, saw its engine licensed out to Raven (Heretic, Hexen) and Rogue Entertainment (Strife.) Hacx wasn't an engine license, however. It was a mod -- though in those days, they used the term "total conversion" to describe changing every asset of the game and sometimes the gameplay itself. A non-commercial example would be the famous Aliens TC for Doom 1, or Batman TC for Doom 2. These days, the engine itself is open source for the most part, so one of the original Hacx developers dug up the old files and released it as a single standalone .wad you can run in almost any sourceport you like.

By contrast, "partial conversions" would be more along the lines of changing major parts of the game, such as to add new monsters, but keeping it recognizably part of the original game, for example STRAIN, which added several new enemies to Doom, alongside many of the originals. (Due to the nature of Doom editing at the time, though, sacrifices had to be made -- new enemies would replace old ones, and sometimes sprite slots reserved for decorations like lamps would be used as an animation frame as well. With advances like ZDoom's DECORATE code, however, these days you can add whatever you want and leave the base game intact.)
