Re: How many languages do you speak ?

Most people only need 2/3 hours at week, but if you're that slow that would need all of your time, it's okay then.

Thank you.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

lol, yeah, no. the best way to learn a language is to use it as much as possible. 2-3 hours a week is not remotely enough if you ever want to become something approaching fluent.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I had 3 hours per week of Japanese and it was fine, unless you want to learn a language in 6 months, but that's pretty much impossible. 3-5 hours a week is more than enough.

You =/= everyone else

Are you judging this by yourself? Because I know plenty of people who think they speak a language, especially Japanese, but are actually pretty awful at it.

I'm judging this by my experience. In college we had 3 hours of lessons, now I'm studying in a language school and we have 5 hours per week. It's the average time you'll find everywhere.

"language school"

Are mommy and daddy paying for this post-college overseas specialty education, weeaboo?

This is one of the saddest attempt at trolling I've seen in this community.

But if you want to know it that much, it's a language school in my own country, funded mostly by the state so I only need to pay a small part of the fees, around 20 euros per month. And everyone can get in as long as they're older than 16.

Now please kill yourself, you retarded piece of shit.

fucking stop with the "go kill yourself" shit. regardless of anything else you say, it is never appropriate. it's always a horrible thing to say.

You must be new here. If you can't take our feedback in this community without telling people to kill themselves, perhaps you should go back to 4chan.

So instead of your parents, it's your country that coddles you. I'm so impressed.

Or, y'know, not, since it's most likely a shitty school.

That's not actually going to get you to learn the language though. You'll learn ABOUT it, but you won't be truly fluent in it until you've been immersed.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
How is not learning a language if you can read it and write it? The speaking part will always be difficult unless you can practice it, but the knowledge is already there.

I don't get it, how do you think people learn new languages then? A lot of people are able of mastering a language without leaving their country.

If you can read and write it, that's just reading and writing. Knowing a language in its entirety also involves speaking it.

I don't get it, how do you think people learn new languages then?

Immersion. You can get fairly good at it if you have someone fluent to practice with on a regular basis, I think, but barring that, it's going to be very difficult to attain any level of true fluency if all you're doing is taking classes while speaking your native language the rest of the time.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Knowing a language does not necessary mean being fluent.

It's this kind of attitude that puts people off learning in the first place.

What's wrong with learning enough for a simple conversation, enough to get directions, to watch the news or read a newspaper? That all qualifies as knowing a language, to some degree.

There are many people who can't even properly spell their native language, or have a limited vocabularly in it, less than foreign learners. By your definition, these people know 0 languages, which is clearly wrong, as they know enough to get by day to day.

The trouble is if you say "I know X language", and don't add any qualifiers, then you might find yourself in a situation where you're in over your head.

If you know "enough of a language to get by" but aren't close to being fluent, you should say "I know some X language" or "I speak it but not fluently". That's what I say for the language I am still learning.

There's nothing wrong with not being fluent in a language. I'm just saying that if your only options are "I know X" and "I don't know X" you're not going to be able to portray your knowledge accurately most of the time.

ow FUCK I just flash backed to high school

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

THIS. You can't just go on the internet and expect to learn anything with much more use than a phrasebook would give you. Unless you're learning Latin (or Sanskrit if you happen to speak a language with the Devanagari script), there is no way just learning out of books/the net will help you.
You need people around you to check, stimulate and correct you.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

Self-study works, in fact there are people who learn more and faster by themselves than going to lessons.

Re: How many languages do you speak ?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
And there are people who learn more and faster by going to lessons. Obviously it depends on the individual person - so blanket judgement on if they have attained a certain skill or not reflects on no-one but the OP negatively.
