I've had people tell me it doesn't because it's not a spoken language.

Then again these people probably wear socks with sandals.

What does 'wear socks with sandals' mean? Because I do that (in late spring, when it's too cold for just sandals but too hot for confined feet), but I'm not sure what it has to do with thinking ASL is/isn't a real language?

It's hard to face the discrimination if you like to wear socks with your sandals. All those people on the street, pointing and shouting "YOU DON'T THINK ASL IS A REAL LANGUAGE! GO HOME, YOU FILTHY SANDALSOCK!"

Makes me sad down to my sock gussets.

I really wanted to learn ASL for a while. It looks pretty difficult!

If you have any understanding of French grammar, you're halfway there. The rest is just knowing which sign means what.

it's pretty easy once you get into it AND if you use it all the time

like, I don't know any deaf people so I don't use it so I can't remember shit but I bet if I started practicing again I'd pick it up fairly quick

it has a really interesting history too imo

anyone who doesn't think it counts has never actually sat down and thought about it, obviously. I'm actually learning right now so that I can use it more effectively in my own classroom :) Children respond so well to instruction in sign language.

I live in Rochester, NY, where ASL is a fairly big deal. I know a little, but I really wish I knew more. I would love to take courses in it, but sadly I just don't have the spare cash at the moment.
