Teen Wolf

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
So I was intrigued by the Dark!Stiles stuff I saw around the internet and decided to give the first episode of Teen Wolf a try...

I hated it. It was about a hundred times crappier than I'd originally imagined. I guess it's just me, but the acting was horrendously over the top, the effects were laughable (like, worse than Charmed or a bad sci-fi movie)... plus, with the "cliques" and the "sports team" and the "party", it was like they tried to cram every single "~high school~" cliche in there. It was just awful.

Now, I have no particularly strong feelings about the werewolf theme (I don't love it or hate it), so could someone tell me... does the show get better over time? Or rather, I guess I should say, does it change at all? Because if not, I think I'll leave this one to the fans it already has.

It doesn't get better, but it definitely changes. If all you're in it for is Dark!Stiles then just jump right to third season. But if you're turned off by horrible effects and cheese, even that might not be enough. But yes, 3rd season is COMPLETELY different than how the series started out. Like, 100% different genre and feel and everything I'd say.

The first season is pretty bad, ngl. Stiles is a pleasure, everyone else pretty much sucks. Season two is a LOT better. 3a is actually THE WORST, but so far 3b is kicking major ass. So it might be a star trek thing going on, IDK.

Yes yes, anon above here and I forgot to specify to start with 3b, not 3a.

I stopped watching after the first episode too, and then I got back into it somehow.

I have a love/hate thing going on for this stupid show. The quality in the writing fluctuates. The show is essentially about teenagers in high school, being dumb teenagers in a high school. There is almost no character development. The special effects are lolworthy. The main protagonist is incredibly boring. The dialogue is stiff and awkward at times.

AND YET.

The cast is stupidly attractive. The older cast members are talented. The plots are actually pretty interesting. I care about these stupid teenagers. Everyone has awesome chemistry with everyone else. It has emotional moments. It deals with gay teenagers like they are totally normal and not social pariahs. The music is catchy.

God help me I love it.

I don't take it too seriously. It's sort of like eating chocolate. I snack and enjoy it, but a main meal it is not.

It definitely gets better. More characters, more drama, higher stakes, better writing, creepy horror, more focus on the sexy dads... but at the same time at it's core it's still a show about supernatural stuff happening to high school students. If you're not interested by, say, the 5th episode, I would say it's not for you.

In contrast, I loved it from the first episode because the fact that it was OTT and milking the cliched high school setting for all it's worth was one of the things that appealed to me most about it - like, this is escapism taken to its highest point. I love how most of the time it's obvious that the writers are very self aware of this fact, but they deftly play it all earnestly enough that there is still tension and suspense in the drama. Also, the characters are fab - I can't think of any character I'm not interested in or annoyed with when they're on screen, and there are like 12 recurring characters so that says a lot ;)

OP

Thanks guys! I think I'll try a few more episodes of S1, and if I don't warm up to it, I'll skip ahead to 3B. I'm a sucker for ~dark~ characters and I'm pretty sure I've seen most plot points on tumblr, so it shouldn't be a huge problem.

I appreciate it!

I might suggest reading some episode summaries and skipping ahead to episodes 6/7, which are kind of a two-parter. Because I was kind of meh on it until 1.07, after which, I was hooked.
