Slash gave me the weirdest "first time" experience. I decided I wanted to try writing it, so I should try it to see how it worked, but found that reading it had actually prepared me pretty well for the real thing, and that some of the things people are so strict about (long and careful preparation, needing copious amounts of actual lube) were not always true. I didn't end up learning much, but I enjoyed it.

Same here. I heartily recommend regular (or not, if that's not your thing) sessions of anal sex for slash writers who are worried about the scenes being too unrealistic.
I'd also recommend those to writers who don't care about the inner workings of anal sex at all - I guarantee they'll cringe every time when they read first time, no preparation, spit-as-lube anal.
