Yeah, Moffat's revealing of Sherlock's parents was underwhelming. Yes, it was a cute gimmick that they were played by Cumberbatch's parents but I was hoping for something that would explain why the Holmes siblings are the way they are. Because the Holmes parents look pretty normal, even average despite what Pa Holmes said how his wife was a genius.

Of course we had to get Moffat's "women on a pedestal" dominatrix fetish in there somewhere! He so feminist, cos Pa Holmes is intimidated by his wife.

Right? I'm so sick of that.

It's not good for anyone to be goddamned intimidated for their SO, Moffat. It's not cute and it's not funny.

Psst! You're projecting your own issues.

I thought the series as a whole does explain them perfectly well. Particularly the one conversation between Mycroft and Sherlock about how, relatively speaking, most people are imbeciles. This would make it extremely difficult to relate to others. But, Mycroft can generally emulate it fairly well, unlike Sherlock who claims to be inherently miswired ('High-functioning sociopath!'), and his drug addiction couldn't possibly have helped.

And, to stray a bit into the realm of headcanon, frankly, I suspect Sherlock purposely exaggerates his strangeness both because he likes being unique, and it because acts as a filter for people worth the effort of trying to connect with.

That second bit would explain why tumblr loves him so much
