How DARE you impugn the beautiful Benny's mother!!!!!

Except literally no one has ever said this any it's pretty accepted that other prior fanon Mummy Holmes would have been awesome instead even if people do like the canon one?

Yeah, Moffat's revealing of Sherlock's parents was underwhelming. Yes, it was a cute gimmick that they were played by Cumberbatch's parents but I was hoping for something that would explain why the Holmes siblings are the way they are. Because the Holmes parents look pretty normal, even average despite what Pa Holmes said how his wife was a genius.

oh, was that the gimmick?

Of course we had to get Moffat's "women on a pedestal" dominatrix fetish in there somewhere! He so feminist, cos Pa Holmes is intimidated by his wife.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I'm so sick of that.

It's not good for anyone to be goddamned intimidated for their SO, Moffat. It's not cute and it's not funny.

Psst! You're projecting your own issues.

I thought the series as a whole does explain them perfectly well. Particularly the one conversation between Mycroft and Sherlock about how, relatively speaking, most people are imbeciles. This would make it extremely difficult to relate to others. But, Mycroft can generally emulate it fairly well, unlike Sherlock who claims to be inherently miswired ('High-functioning sociopath!'), and his drug addiction couldn't possibly have helped.

And, to stray a bit into the realm of headcanon, frankly, I suspect Sherlock purposely exaggerates his strangeness both because he likes being unique, and it because acts as a filter for people worth the effort of trying to connect with.

That second bit would explain why tumblr loves him so much

I don't think that is who most people headcanon on their mother? I have seen Helen Mirren 99% of the time. http://www.manhattanmoviemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/RED-100DF-02738R.jpg

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was M Judi Dench?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Helen Mirren was mine for sure. I think they way they did it was cute, but she would have been a badass choice.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer the cannon version

I just like how the brothers are just strange. It reminds me of my own family

Besides I have never seen the fanon version done that well it usually has some stupid abusive family tropes the author does not know how to use

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same, I don't think people realize that kids can just end up weird sometimes. It's not always "something must have happened to make them that way!!!"

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I don't like it, I guess. I wanted a little resemblance between the parents and kids.

I prefer the canon too. I think it's pretty sweet, and I liked Papa Holmes a lot.

I liked them too. They were cute and loving and really seemed like ideal parents. It was an interesting comparison.

I liked the Judi Dench's M theory myself.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Of course, I also liked the theory of Dench's M as Peggy Carter (Captain America) - Peggy is a nickname for Margaret.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I like it only because it validates my Mycroft headcanon.

*is shallow*

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ths is not a version of Fannon Mummy Holmes I was aware of, but I approve.

Still, I got a real kick out of the canon version. I know it Josses a lot of people's headcannons, but I'm amused by the idea that Sherlock and Mycroft are at least partially creatures of their own making and not products of an especially unusual upbringing.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have an opinion on loving upbringing v. distant upbringing or normalish parents v. odd-as-the-brothers parents, but the Holmes parents were not posh enough for me, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
They are perfectly appropriately upper middle class. People hankering after Lord and Lady Holmes make me laugh like a drain and suspect 'American' or at the least someone who knows squat about British society that they didn't learn from TV.
