Ughhhh, please, no.

I like del Toro and Mako Mori was pretty awesome, but I could do without the other 95% of the movie.

What did you dislike about it? I realize the genre is not to everyone's taste, but both story and character wise I thought it was a notch above most action flicks.

To clarify, I meant 'having a pretty diverse cast-wise', not plotting-wise.

...It did?

Well "black guy adopts Japanese girl" isnt a thing you see a ton of. Hispanic tech guy with an Asian name speaking Chinese implies mixed race. Chinese pilots, Chinese crowd scenes. Even the white folk were from Oz, Europe, Russia; varied non US locations. Ron Perlman gives no fucks, but he was just for the lulz anyway. It wasn't perfect or anything but they did have a pretty nice hodgepodge of races and nationalities going.

I agree. I loved the special effects but I that was probably about it. I thought most of the dialogue was too cheesy and at least 80% of the cast was terrible. Idris Elba and the actress who played Mako Mori were the only decent parts of the film. (I didn't mind hot Australian dad but as an Australian every time he opened his mouth I cringed)

I wish they could have got actual Australians for his and his son's roles. Non-Australians rarely get our accent right.

Seriously. It's not like Hollywood is short in the hot manly Aussie department. I did like the guys they went with but their accents were awful.

The only upside I see in it is that Pacific Rim is where Rob Kazinsky went after he had to pull out of The Hobbit. Having watched the AUJ EE appendices... I hated how he looked in makeup. I'm glad Deam O'Gorman is Fíli.

Of course, we don't know anything of what the "personal reasons" for why Kazinsky left - they may have almost nothing to do with him ending up on Pacific Rim, but I still think Fíli wouldn't have been half as appealing with him in the role.

Well don't worry, DC will be boring us with some dreary soul sucking crap soon enough.

SA

I think most DCU movies are terrible, too. Moot point.

Would I be correct in guessing you are NOT the sort of person who enjoys watching robots and monsters beat the shit out of each other?

If so, I think you should know that Pacific Rim was not made for people like you.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with robots and monsters beating the shit out of each other.

I do have a problem with the lack of female characters other than Mako Mori and yet the Mako Mori Test is still a "higher standard" than the Bechdel Test, the terrible acting of Charlie Hunnam, and Tumblr's extended orgasm of the film.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
so you are an idiot that doesn't think a movie is good unless it checks all the little boxes?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
It sounds like they actually have valid complaints (aside from Tumblrgasm). There were only 2 women in the cast (I don't think the Russian woman spoke) to a bunch of guys so it's probably affection for the character/movie more than actual sound reason behind the suggestions to supersede the Bechdel test with the Mako Mori test; the main character (Charlie Hunnam) was pretty stiff in the role and a lead actor's poor performance is definitely reason enough to dislike a movie.
