Ughhhh, please, no.

I like del Toro and Mako Mori was pretty awesome, but I could do without the other 95% of the movie.

What did you dislike about it? I realize the genre is not to everyone's taste, but both story and character wise I thought it was a notch above most action flicks.

OP:

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
To clarify, I meant 'having a pretty diverse cast-wise', not plotting-wise.

I agree. I loved the special effects but I that was probably about it. I thought most of the dialogue was too cheesy and at least 80% of the cast was terrible. Idris Elba and the actress who played Mako Mori were the only decent parts of the film. (I didn't mind hot Australian dad but as an Australian every time he opened his mouth I cringed)

Would I be correct in guessing you are NOT the sort of person who enjoys watching robots and monsters beat the shit out of each other?

If so, I think you should know that Pacific Rim was not made for people like you.

I'm sorry. :( I agree, though, there need to be more movies like it. I heard that there might be a sequel/prequel? Not exactly sure which, but hopefully it will turn out good as well?

More Pacific Rim? Yes Please.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
OP, did your family not get that with the giant robots and all, there were likely to be some Asian characters in the film?

Pacific Rim had something that was missing from just about every other movie of the last couple of years. A sense of fun. It wasn't some pretentious, dull as ditchshit, "realistic" piece but a big cheesy love letter to over-the-top action. I want more pieces like that, they rock.
nightscale: Starbolt (PR: Mako Mori)

I enjoy the silly plot for what it is in Pacific Rim but the characters were the main reason I enjoyed that movie so much, that and the sheer amount of fun it was.

They were being racist? That sucks. Del Toro was going for the opposite of that. :( Why did they even watch the movie?

I wish more action /sci-fi movies were as fun as Pacific Rim.

It sucks that your family doesn't like Mako :(

Yea, this movie was pure fun. Might've not been ~deep~, but it wasn't meant to be; it did what it did well and that's all that should matter imo.

And Mako is adorable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you don't start with the whole "Mako Mori Test" bullshit, yeah, I can see your point, diversity-wise. I just wish people would stop being so blinded by it that they refuse to acknowledge the film's faults wrt the other "ism."

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for the love of fuck just goddamn spell it out. Or if you're too goddamn lazy to spell it out, then just use "with." The rest of the phrase is superfluous, anyway.

Pacific Rim was great, and like others said, lots of fun. Yeah it might not have been deep or made you think or anything like that, but it sure as hell was entertaining.

Yeah OP I loved that movie. And I especially loved that the whole ~people from different cultures make use of the drift to connect to one another~ really interesting. I can't remember what the director had said exactly, but the anti-racism themes in the movie were definitely intentional.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

Is it bad that I wonder why this is a thing?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-19 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Intellectually, I get it, I really do. But the majority of the main cast were still white guys, so the idea that people would even bother to be racist still boggles the mind.

But then, most racism does. :(

Glad to see you defending this movie despite it's problems, OP. That shit your family was pulling is exactly the reason we need more movies like this, and let's all hope that we get more, soon. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of don't understand the big fuss about Mako Mori. The actress is endearing and everything, but she seems (to me) to fall into the category of the submissive Asian woman stereotype because of her deference to Stacker Pentacost. I mean, she only disobeyed her father figure and participated in the partner try-outs because another fellow (Raleigh) told her to. So I kind of don't get the fuss. There are a lot of other female characters who have their own story lines, so it's certainly not the first time that it's happened.

Before I get jumped, I'd like to clarify that I'm not dissing the character. I'm not even dissing the movie. I don't have strong opinions about it, I've just always been confused about why people act like this movie is The Best (I do really love how the movie looks, though).

THANK YOU!

I hated Pacific Rim deeply but the diversity (and the especially hot men) were pluses for it. Fuck your family for being racist. You're better than them.
