Looking for audiobook recommendations

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone got any? Personally I love the Red Dwarf audiobooks (the first two, at least) but they're the only ones I've found that really gelled with me.

Latawnya, The Naughty Horse is strangely compelling.

Do you prefer full cast audio, or ones where it's just one person reading the whole book?

I've only really heard ones that are read by a single person, but would definitely give the other type a go! Part of what I like about the RD ones is that he's so good at giving each character an individual voice, so I can only guess that an audiobook with a full cast would be even more awesome (:

Sorry for the late reply.

Well, there's the official Full Cast Audio website, and while they tend to do children's/young adult books, they've done a couple that I really liked, including the Emelan books by Tamora Pierce, and the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede, (which is super great in the third book, because Morwen as nine cats, and as Morwen is the POV character, she can understand them, so you have nine cats with individual voices/personalities, and it is awesome), they also did the WIld Magic quartet (another by Tamora Pierce) full-cast-audio-y, but none of her other Tortall books I don't think. Maybe poke around there some?

As for non-full cast, I just finished the book Night Watch by Terry Pratchett as an audio book, and thought it was rather good. Apparently there are some other Discworld books that were done with full cast? I'll need to look into that to see if it's legit, |D Before that I had listened to the Pacific Rim audio book, which was interesting- and Gottlieb had the right accent- which was a giant plus for me, but it was kind of weird in parts, when it came to official reports. Not bad, but not my favorite.

There's a World War Z audiobook that has a full cast, and it's pretty good; they even got Mark Hamill, which made me smile, but it's also an abridged audiobook, and they cut one of my favorite stories, so I'm on the fence about that one. >_>;

I've heard good things about Graphic Audio, but I haven't personally listened to anything by them, so I don't know for sure it they're any good, but maybe take a look, and see if any books you like are in there?

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy read by Stephen Fry

You might also try the Dresden Files read by James Marsters It's better to start with the second or third one because the first had one of the worst production qualities ever and the second was all that much better.

You could also search for Red Dwarf on audible and see what other books are recommended for people who liked that series.

Ooh, didn't think of checking on audible - thank you, will give that a go!

I loved The Hitchhiker's Guide show and have never got round to reading the books so would be completely on board with that, but I found Stephen Fry's reading of the Harry Potter books really lacklustre - don't suppose you've heard those too to compare?

And I've read a couple of the Dresden Files books and loved them so will definitely be look those up. (Also haha I just googled James Marsters because the name was vaguely familiar and it's Spike?! Awesome upon awesome!)

If you didn't like SF's reading of Harry Potter I think you wouldn't like his reading of HHGTTG. There's an abridged audiobook by Stephen Moore that's pretty easy to find, and an unabridged version read by Douglas Adams himself. The last I knew it's pretty hard to find a copy of that but it's been a while since I went looking.

There are audiobook comms on LJ and I know either theaudiolibrary or audiobooks has the complete Dresden Files audiobooks posted. You have to join to see posts for either comm but it's worth it for all the amazing stuff people have shared over the years. You can listen to the samples on audible and then download or request something from the comms if you like it.

Looks intriguing - if not, this might be an occasion for... *shifty eyes* seeing if I can download it somewhere...

If you haven't read any of the ASoIaF books, I heartily recommend the Roy Dotrice versions. ...At least up until A Feast For Crows. It kind of goes off the rails after that.

I've actually just finished ASOIAF (so far...) but am already considering a re-read so definitely not opposed to the idea of checking the audiobooks out - thanks!
