The writers treated her character like crap it does have to be said. I get she wasn't the best actor on the show (she wasn't the worst, but when you are up against Sirtis and Wheaton not being the worst is hardly something to crow about), but I blame the writers for giving her mid-80s "action girl" style of plot and dialogue. She had, potentially, the best background but Gene's TNG-era ideals (or possibly Network censors) just wouldn't let anyone dig into it. It was a crying shame. On the up side, it did give Worf a huge character boost, so win-some lose-some.

Pretty much this. And I don't understand why we couldn't have gotten into her background -- Turkana IV wasn't part of the Federation, so it's not like it would have violated Gene's utopian vision to delve into that backstory. :( It was so cool.

I don't think either Sirtis or Wheaton are bad actors. I think Deanna's character in particular was given terrible, terrible lines for several seasons, but when the writing for the show is good, they're excellent in their roles.

Wheaton isn't a bad actor now, but back then he was dreadful. As for Sirtis, I have never seen her in anything in any role which convinces me she could act. She can recite lines, but not act.
