She looks like she just got off the bus from Michfest.

She was the primary reason we ( SO and I) developed such a loathing for TNG that we never made it to Season 3. (I'm not even sure we made it to 2, actually). I am aware this might be because, as longtime Terkkers, our expectations were so high.

In rtetrospect, I can say that for me the only thing good about the hideousness of TNG was that I went into DS9 with such low expectations, and thus found my mind entirely blown by how good it was. Jadzia is still one of my favorite female characters of all time.

She wasn't a spectacular character, no, but dude -- in the first season of TNG, EVERYONE was characterized badly except for Data. Even Picard was an annoying dipshit. So IMO she could have become really interesting if she had stayed along with the rest of the cast.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Data wasn't exactly immune. They overplayed the not understanding words thing to the point where Data's missing out on things that are in the Dictionary. Proverbs are one thing, informal words are another. /anon who loves Data.

I didn't like a couple of her storylines.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
And I remember her being awfully self-righteous a few times (although that happened to a few of the characters, especially in the early seasons), but overall I liked her character. Pulaski, on the other hand...

Same. I never connected with her the way I did with the other characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because, you know, she didn't make it out of the crapfest of a first season, while the other characters got seven seasons of far better writing.

I would've liked her a lot more if she was played by someone who could act.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Fun fact: Marina Sirtis was originally cast as Yar and Crosby as Troi. Gene switched their roles at the last minute.

My problem was that I never actually believed that she was head of security (or whatever she was). For me Crosby never "sold" the character's competence. At all. Ever.

(Except in "Naked Now" :p.)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't a secret. It would be a secret if you did like Tasha Yar.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
MTE

Everybody in my family hated Yar and when my sister introduced her husband to TNG, he disliked her too.

I hated that they kept bringing her back all the damn time.

I only kind of liked her but I hated so much how she died that it made me retroactively like her more. Plus, Data's reaction was so sad I couldn't help but feel a little something for her. I liked that she saved future in the one ep (but hated what happened to her after).

The writers treated her character like crap it does have to be said. I get she wasn't the best actor on the show (she wasn't the worst, but when you are up against Sirtis and Wheaton not being the worst is hardly something to crow about), but I blame the writers for giving her mid-80s "action girl" style of plot and dialogue. She had, potentially, the best background but Gene's TNG-era ideals (or possibly Network censors) just wouldn't let anyone dig into it. It was a crying shame. On the up side, it did give Worf a huge character boost, so win-some lose-some.

I don't feel anything for her one way or another. Her backstory was kind of interesting (She's from a gang planet!) and I generally like women in physically powerful positions (Like security officer). However, there's not a lot of her and what there is of here is all muddled in first season ickiness.

I'd probably feel the same about any of the characters if they had left in TNG's first season. *shrug*

Anyway, you can find her annoying. Really, no one cares. It's cool.

OH WE GOT A SECRET WAR IN THE HOUSE. A SECRET WAR IN THE HOUSE.

I am going to eagerly await the rebuttal for this.

STEP ON IT, YAR LOVER.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't really care about her the first time I watched the show. But when I rewatched season 1 after seeing "Yesterday's Enterprise," I was bawling when her death came.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I liked her. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate her but I rarely rewatch early TNG because it was so cringe inducing bad back then. I agree with a lot of the others in this thread that she might have been better with better writing, a lot of the actors also improved as the seasons went on.

But it's hard to mourn her as a character when I really love Worf and don't even think of her as security chief, it was Worf and it always has been Worf in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this just about killed me. I liked Yar because she was kickass and take-no-prisoners. I mean, Troi and Crusher are nice and all, but that's the point. They're nice. They're nurturing. They're traditional women. Yar? She's Starbuck just a little too early for her time.

I am so with you on this. One of the best things about Next Gen was they killed her off then brought her back to kill her off again!
