I had this problem reading the first book of the Gormenghast trilogy, minus the peer pressure (I never even tried to read the other two novels). I hated almost all of the characters for almost all of the book - not because they were all evil, but because they were too frequently either annoying or doing things that frustrated me. When you don't care to hear any more about any of the characters, it's hard for writing or anything else to make up for it and keep you interested.
