It gets better with Season 2.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Not if OP's problems is that characters are unlikeable.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
DA

It still gets better, actually. I think Jesse and Skylar both become more likable after S1. Also I can't be the only one that thinks Mike was totally likable.

I never understood this notion that some people have that in order to enjoy a show there has to be some good guy to root for. Why? Can someone explain this to me?

For example, I am seeing people give up after finishing the second season of House of Cards because everyone is vile on that show. Just backstabbing after backstabbing. Personally, I love it. (Finished it last night. OMG!!!!!!) And it's sad to see people go, "Nope. Can't watch it. No one is redeemable." Why do you need a hero to enjoy a story?

OP here

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about now having someone to root for. I can even root for Walter a bit,in a way. It's just that they all infuriate me in various levels, especially in the human interaction parts, which are a big part of the series. The whole "intervention" think made m skin crawl so much I actually had to pause it.

There's a difference between "good" characters, and likeable ones. I think for OP, the characters are just not likeable, and yes, some of that may be based on them being horrible people, but there's probably more to it than that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I need to not want every single character to shut the fuck up and never speak again.

Personally, It's not so much that I need a hero to root for as I need someone likeable to invest me in the story. The person can be horrible in their actions and motivations but have a personality/non-redeeming but fascinating backstory I like despite that.

Example: In Bleach I like Aizen but absolutely hate Juha Bach. Aizen is an absolutely horrible person in every way and I rooted for him to be defeated straight from his reveal as a villain, but he has charm and mysterious motivations that make him interesting. Despite being similar in several ways Bach is just repulsive to me and I skim past all of his appearances in the manga.

Most people need to have at least one character they care about in order to make a show interesting -- someone they feel sympathy for or whose struggles they are invested in. Otherwise, watching the show just becomes an exercise in rage, disgust, and/or apathy. Few people can enjoy a show while waving a flag that says, "Team Nobody!"

I don't need a hero (I tend to prefer anti-heroes anyway), but I do need at least a core of characters that I like. Preferably, I need to like more than half the characters. I spend my life working in a job where I don't necessarily care for the people I work with/for. When I'm watching something for fun, I really need for it to be people that I enjoy watching/like/want to spend time with.

It's not about rooting for someone, in my case.
It's more that if I find all characters unlikeable, I don't want to waste my time watching what happens to them, unless what happens to them is a quick and painful death.

The world has enough people being annoying that we have to cope with. I don't see why I should subject myself to witness more of those in fiction if there aren't sides to compensate for it.

This is pretty much how I feel about Seinfeld.

I so get this.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't want to watch Sopranos. No, I don't want to watch The Shield. Yes, I hear the writing and acting is good. I still don't want to watch a show about horrible people doing terrible things, especially if we're supposed to root for them in some way.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-02-19 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think exactly this same thing whenever anyone I know tells me to watch it, OP. This feel is a feel I know.

Exactly why I'll never watch it. I have to like at least some of the characters to enjoy a show.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone I know liked at least one character very much. Maybe you should actually check it out?

I had this problem reading the first book of the Gormenghast trilogy, minus the peer pressure (I never even tried to read the other two novels). I hated almost all of the characters for almost all of the book - not because they were all evil, but because they were too frequently either annoying or doing things that frustrated me. When you don't care to hear any more about any of the characters, it's hard for writing or anything else to make up for it and keep you interested.

Not even Walt Jr? You think Walt Jr is a horrible person?

:(

OP here

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I will give you that Walt Jr was the character that annoyed me the least. But I remember there being parts I even rolled my eyes at him. I do not like him enough to watch the show for him, in any case.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think I just found my Breaking Bad soulmate. I've tried to watch and like and maybe enjoy the show, but I couldn't. Because of the people. It has nothing to do with the fact that I would have to "root for the bad guy". I just don't find them likable.

[personal profile] thezmage 2014-02-19 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Why can't you just say "I watched some of it, I didn't like any of the characters, and if I don't like the characters I don't enjoy watching it?"

(Anonymous) 2014-02-19 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, saying that leads to "you just need to watch MORE! it gets BETTER! OMG IT'S THE BEST SERIES EVER WITH THE BEST WRITING AND THE BEST EVERYTHING HOW CAN YOU NOT WATCH IT".

It's the same crap people get when they don't want to watch Game of Thrones or whatever else show is THE MOST POPULAR BESTEST SHOW EVAR RIGHT NOW. Whatever reason you have for not wanting to watch it doesn't count because you're just not TRYING hard enough to like it. /eyeroll

Disclaimer: I get if you don't like it, and it's fine if you don't want to give it a longer try and see the changes in season 2.

It makes me sad to see several posts saying that's why they'll never watch it. Guys, there are several characters who are not Walt and who many people find likable.

Really.

I mean, I think everyone EVEN WALT had some redeeming and likable qualities. I think Jesse, Saul, Mike, Badger and Skinny Pete were the most likable characters (excluding Holly and Walt Jr., because really, they're kids). I liked Gomie, Hank and Marie a lot too. I liked Skylar, even though she made me mad sometimes.
