I never understood this notion that some people have that in order to enjoy a show there has to be some good guy to root for. Why? Can someone explain this to me?

For example, I am seeing people give up after finishing the second season of House of Cards because everyone is vile on that show. Just backstabbing after backstabbing. Personally, I love it. (Finished it last night. OMG!!!!!!) And it's sad to see people go, "Nope. Can't watch it. No one is redeemable." Why do you need a hero to enjoy a story?

It's not about now having someone to root for. I can even root for Walter a bit,in a way. It's just that they all infuriate me in various levels, especially in the human interaction parts, which are a big part of the series. The whole "intervention" think made m skin crawl so much I actually had to pause it.

DA: I had that problem in that scene too. Though it didn't stop me from loving the show, I think I get what your problem was, and yes, the characters did get more interesting and less infuriating from season 2 onward. Most of them, most of the time, of course.

I thought that was the entire point of that scene, actually. they all meant well but everyone (except for marie) was being ridiculously selfish about it. you were supposed to be infuriated.

(Not trying to push you into watching more if it's not your bag, just saying that imo that was intentional. it's supposed to be as uncomfortable for the audience as it was for everyone sitting in that living room.)

There's a difference between "good" characters, and likeable ones. I think for OP, the characters are just not likeable, and yes, some of that may be based on them being horrible people, but there's probably more to it than that.

I need to not want every single character to shut the fuck up and never speak again.

That's similar to my sentiments.

Personally, It's not so much that I need a hero to root for as I need someone likeable to invest me in the story. The person can be horrible in their actions and motivations but have a personality/non-redeeming but fascinating backstory I like despite that.

Example: In Bleach I like Aizen but absolutely hate Juha Bach. Aizen is an absolutely horrible person in every way and I rooted for him to be defeated straight from his reveal as a villain, but he has charm and mysterious motivations that make him interesting. Despite being similar in several ways Bach is just repulsive to me and I skim past all of his appearances in the manga.

Most people need to have at least one character they care about in order to make a show interesting -- someone they feel sympathy for or whose struggles they are invested in. Otherwise, watching the show just becomes an exercise in rage, disgust, and/or apathy. Few people can enjoy a show while waving a flag that says, "Team Nobody!"

This is a perfectly succinct explanation of it. *claps*

That's my thoughts on Supernatural. I don't care or like any of the characters on that show, so why should I bother even watching it even if it was to hate watch it?

I don't need a hero (I tend to prefer anti-heroes anyway), but I do need at least a core of characters that I like. Preferably, I need to like more than half the characters. I spend my life working in a job where I don't necessarily care for the people I work with/for. When I'm watching something for fun, I really need for it to be people that I enjoy watching/like/want to spend time with.

It's not about rooting for someone, in my case.
It's more that if I find all characters unlikeable, I don't want to waste my time watching what happens to them, unless what happens to them is a quick and painful death.

The world has enough people being annoying that we have to cope with. I don't see why I should subject myself to witness more of those in fiction if there aren't sides to compensate for it.
