This is usually true for me too, because I need to give the audiobook my undivided attention, but I'm the sort of person who needs to be doing something with my hands at the same time as doing something else with my brain, and without a visual to focus on, my auditory attention is too likely to drift and then I lose the thread of the narrative.

They can be fun if you listen while you're doing something else, like cooking or cleaning...

That's the problem, though -- if I'm doing something like that, I'm liable to lose concentration on the story. I can multitask during a TV show or movie because there's also something to look at, which I think helps me keep focus. With an audiobook, it's too easy for it to turn into "background noise" and I miss what's going on.
